@rockchalkjayhawk Well he didn’t ruin the Sox in the early 80’s when he managed. And then the way he came back to bite us as Reinsdorf wanted to make up for his mistake in 86 and hired him out of the nursing home in 21 when he was clearly past his time.

RE: So, Kansas Reinstated the Border War (for the Chiefs)
@rockchalkjayhawk A bit less to the extreme but that explains the Sox situation. Not sure how long you’ve dealt with your owner but since 1980 when he bought the team from beloved Sox owner Bill Veeck, tore down our great old stadium for the last of the 70’s/80’s mallparks, let Hawk Harrelson fire Tony Larussa, let the labor strike of 1994 happen despite the Sox having their best chance to win a world series slip by, oh and trading away key pieces in 97 of a team that was 3 games out of first at the beginning of August saying that team couldn’t win it all anyways. So I can relate for sure.

RE: So, Kansas Reinstated the Border War (for the Chiefs)
I’ve wondered what the cause of poor attendance at A’s games is. They had a great run with the Bash Brothers and attendance peaked all time high for them. The 3 in a row dynasty of Reggie, Vida, Rollie and Catfish was barely supported by fans. Incredibly low under a million those years. Most years in their history well under 2 million and many under a million fans.
The link between a very bad stadium for viewing as fans must be something. I think it influences White Sox attendance as much as their bad teams has. Colorado is on record losses pace and averaging almost 30,000 fans this year. Nice park with nice views I think from some seats and fans attend. Oakland has a bad park, and a location that just screams ‘go do something else today’ by virtue of the myriad #'s of outdoors opportunities in the Bay area. Playing 2nd fiddle to the Giants, is interesting because SF fans have myriad options of other things to do, except they have a great, like maybe the best stadium in all of baseball so they attend games.
I feel sorry for the Oakland fan to have their minds played with like this for so many years now. I can relate because there’s been rumors for decades here that the Sox are going to move. If they left town, I’d cease being a baseball fan. Always been my #1 sport and since adulthood they’ve been the team I follow, and there’s really no team on the side for me.

I’ve been to Yellowstone 3 times now. Have not watched Yellowstone ever. Don’t plan to but really hope to go to Yellowstone again.

RE: My memorable moments
@focojayhawk Wow, great memory. Don’t remember that one. When I taught in Baton Rouge, I taught Bobby Earl, Lesters nephew who sadly tried to stick someone up and got shot in the face. Such a shame.

RE: My memorable moments
I didn’t see KU lose in AFH until my senior year. Then we lost 3 out of 4 home games to our last three opponents in the 88 championship run. Sweet, very sweet revenge.
-
RE: My memorable moments
@dylans They were really good this year and while the worst team in recent KU history should have beaten them, we didn’t and instead they made it all the way to the championship and forgot to shoot before the buzzer allowing Florida to win. (I know you were joking…or were you?)

RE: My memorable moments
Big 12 has had a good run of basketball besides our success. Baylor, Houston, Texas Tech also in championship games. Tech could have won had a non call turned differently. Houston lost closely but in a brutal way and I’m sure that kid is having some sleepless nights. Of course in crunch time we had Sherron and Mario to perform miracles and I guess Houston didn’t.

Most memorable in person moments -
Wilt Chamberlain coming back to have his jersey retired.
For Silvio Desousa’s WWE audition I was right on that baseline sitting during directly in front of Christian Braun’s mom. The actual best part about that game was hearing Mrs Braun’s mom voice when yelling at Christian. Dead giveaway that it was a players mom without even looking. lol
Saw many victories so the Acie Law IV game sticks with a guy. Losses suck!
Interesting memory of the brawl. So Christians mom was yelling at him to stay out of it?

My memorable moments
Every fan remembers the big games and moments. The championships being the most obvious. But here are some good Jayhawk game memories I’ve had that probably zero or very few people will remember.
These are from my student in person years:
Larry Brown was pissed at the ref. The ball had rolled to Brown who picked it up and rolled it all the way down to the opposite end of the court. Amazingly the ref didn’t T him up.
Late night, 1987 and the team lip synching “Kansas City Here We Come”.
I always sat behind the basket in AFH. If we got there 2 hours early the seats were always empty, right on the floor. Danny grabbed a rebound and threaded a full court bounce pass from the right side of the lane to a streaking (yes he was clothed) player in stride who finished with a thunderous dunk.
A kid from Iowa St shot an airball. We just let him have it with the chant until finally Brown told us to leave him alone!
Some memorable TV moments that weren’t particularly notable.
Arkansas’ 40 minutes of hell was famous that year and they smacked us in the 1st half of an elite 8 game. But by the 5 minute mark of the 2nd half we had firm control and their big bodied center Oliver Miller went down on the court with an ‘injury’ he just lay there for like 5 minutes. He needed a rest is what it really looked like as we had amazingly worn out their team.
Another elite 8 bludgeoning in 2002, this time it was Oregon. I just remember Aaron Miles, Kirk, Gooden, etc just running them out of the Kohl Center gym that day. 100-80 final score and it was beautiful to watch.
Selden was famous for his dunk against Baylor in the Big12 tourney, but he had one that year against Kentucky and one of their NBA centers that was just astounding.
A few more in person games, but from the past decade or so. Texas’ fight song is the tune of “I’ve been working on the railroad”. They call it “Eyes of Texas” and after a KU win in Austin I was singing rock chalk to the same tune as we were walking out.
While at the NC game in the superdome in 2012 we were way up in the stratosphere with tickets purchased from a former bucketeer. A group of Kentucky fans directly in front of us who decided to stand the whole game. This was a very neutral section of the stands. I asked them to sit, the punk kid young enough to be my son pointed to the big screen and said you can watch it up there. grrrrrr
Illini fans hate Bill Self as much as some KU fans still hate Roy for leaving which of course are related. In the United Center for the Elite 8 a guy I was chatting with wearing U of I gear said he was there to cheer against Bill Self. I told him I understood, but there’s not a coach in the country who would turn down an opportunity to coach at KU. (fyi the next Chicagoan he should be targeting is Jaxson Davis. Most people around here don’t buy the 4 star rating. Should be higher. MARK MY WORDS!)
That’s all I can think of right now. Whatchu got?

RE: Not Sure
I would recommend learning how to shoot 3 pointers Steph Curry like, defending all guys on the perimeter and signing with KU. Everybody has eligibility these days. Get a good NIL deal too.
-
RE: Not Sure
Of course this means we’re not letting you leave game chats early, no matter how good, uh bad the game is going because you have to go to bed. Nope.
-
RE: Not Sure
Congrats!! I’ve got 339 days and 6 hours to go, but who’s counting?

RE: KU Roster for 25-26
@dylans He’s not being forced to work in Utah. He could use that great Rutgers education I’m sure he got and go get a job he likes. I understand your point though and it’s interesting how we’re part of that elite group of teams/colleges.
-
RE: KU Roster for 25-26
@kjayhawks The prima donna of Rutgers cried when Utah drafted him, apparently not tears of joy.
-
RE: KU Roster for 25-26
@kjayhawks One of them two Rutgers guys gots lots of growing up to do. Not Harper, but the other one. Saw quite a few Rutger games this year. Forgot his name, could care less to look it up.

RE: The portal.
If I could get paid for each of the comments on this thread…Wondering if it’s safe to shut er down now? Is Bill done? Roster is set?
-
RE: The portal.
@mayjay Hmm, I’ll have to check with my wife. You see I’m retiring from teaching in one year and would rather go back to work and save my retirement than try to help KU basketball!

RE: The portal.
@rockchalkjayhawk said in The portal.:
So, do we have a team yet?
…as we wait impatiently
That is the question. Reminds me of my enrollment at KU. Didn’t get finalized until middle of July because of some transcripts that didn’t show up. Once I was on campus the team was energized for a FF in 86 and championship 2 years later. I’ll take a similar ending to this years recruiting frustrations.

Interesting baseball story featuring William Allen White
This is a copy and paste from facebook. Just in case you’re not aware White was a very influential journalist who went to KU and is the namesake for our journalism school.
Island Park, Wichita, KS, June 21, 1925 - This tiny ballpark is mostly obscure to even the most knowledgeable baseball fan, but 100 years ago on this date it might have been the host to one of the most unimaginable matchup of two teams one could contrive – a squad of Ku Klux Klan vs one of Negro Leaguers.
But it did happen and from all accounts an epic game to witness. The Negro League team was the Wichita Monrovians, a solid unit that mostly barnstormed. They came into the game with a 52-8 record against mostly top amateur clubs and many of these teams were white.
The Ku Klux Klan nine was a local Wichita club that went by the name “Number 6 team”. Little else is known about them or their players who participated in this game.
As for motivation it’s easier to understand why the Monrovians would agree to this game, for one they’re more of a professional team and playing was their way to earn a living. And second, what African-American young man of that era, or any other for that matter, wouldn’t the relish the opportunity to stick it to bigots.
For the Ku Klux Klan it was a little more complicated, but at the time Kansas had a newspaper publisher by the name of William Allen White that was running for Governor in 1924 and was strongly anti-Klan. He was also campaigning to abolish the white supremacist group (I like this guy already) while calling them “self-constituted body of moral idiots.”
So the sentiment was starting to turn in Kansas against the Ku Klux Klan, and the hate group saw this as a chance to invoke some positive public relations, and hence agreed to the contest.
With both teams agreeing to play and promised a clean game, the attention turned to the fans, at the time it was thought that the Wichita area had up to 6,000 Klan members. Violence from this end was a concern, so much that when a local paper printed an article announcing the game they added: “Strangle holds, razors and horsewhips, and other violent implements of argument will be barred at the baseball game at Island Park…when the baseball club of Wichita Klan Number 6 goes up against the Wichita Monrovians, Wichita’s crack colored team.
The colored boys are asking all their supporters to be on hand to watch (the) contest…due to the wide difference of the two organizations….the novelty of the game will attract a large crowd of fans altho [sic] both teams say that all the fans will see is baseball” To make sure the umpires were impartial and without bias, the game was officiated by two white Catholics, ‘Irish’ Garrety and Dan Dwyer. At game time it was a blistering 102 degrees with strong winds and both teams in the first five innings had scored one run. But then the bats from both sides got cooking in the heat and a tight game turned into a sew saw battle with the Monrovians at the end being on top by a 10-8 score.
Victory was theirs and hate had lost the day. -Ron A. Bolton

@nuleafjhawk I think it was my wife. I’d never post such an optimistic outlook for KU football.

RE: Jayhawk football schedule. Wissox Forecast.
@Crimsonorblue22 Don’t get used to it! How are you feeling about the season?
-
Jayhawk football schedule. Wissox Forecast.
Disclaimer: I know little about these opponents! Did a little research. Still know little.
Fresno, August 23 (wow, that’s early) Early season jitters, but solid 21 point win.
Wagner Aug 29. (wow, 2 games before September). Nothing but a blowout would be panic inducing.
Missouri. Sept. 6. First real competition. Away. As much as I hate to say it, I have little confidence here.
West Virginia Sept 20. Home game. Last years meltdown avenged. 3-1
Cincy Sept 27 Home Bears of all kinds not good at football. We win. 4-1. Only 2 games to bowl eligibility.
UCF. Oct 4 Away. Athlon has them dead last in the league so I’ll give us our 5th win and a gaudy 5-1 record.
TTech. Oct 11 Away No chance. 5-2
Silo Tech Oct 25 We’ve been so close. Home field advantage never seems to make a difference against these guys and they’re highly regarded. I want to pick us, but reality hits hard once again. 5-3
OkieSt Nov. 1. Home. Should be a fairly easy one. Bowl Eligible! 6-3
Arizona. Nov 8 Away. They’ll be ranked. I think we lose. 6-4
Another 2 week layoff, the 3rd of the season.
At ISU. Nov 22. We’ve had their number. The coach everyone lists as the next great one to move on can’t beat Kansas. We’re in their head. 7-4
Utah. Nov 28 They’re supposed to be better than last years disappointing team but we want this win badly to go 6-3 in conference and play in a decent bowl game.
Another disappointing bowl-less season means Lance starts to feel the heat a little bit. The new OC was an exciting pick. Do our WR’s pick up the slack after the loss of the exciting playmakers from the past years? I think the key is there.
We are no longer to be overlooked in the league. Last season may cause some to do so but the magic of the refurbished stadium and an energized fan base leads to a nice season once again.

Maybe Self could host dinners for crypto purchasers.

RE: KU Baseball 8-0!
This baseball team is having a great season. Playing in the semifinals tonight of the league tourney, 6:30 possible regional host as well. Saw one prognosticator having them as a 2 seed in their regional which is different than 2 seed in basketball. It’s kind of like a sweet 16 seed.

RE: The portal.
This is kind of depressing, but it is just sports. I mean weather. I mean both, sports and weather depressing at the same time is too much.

RE: DC Terror Attack
Besides the man killed, her brother, who wasn’t involved, was also a KU student.

DC Terror Attack
Just learned the young woman killed was a KU grad and her brother as well.

RE: The portal.
@ImmunoHawk Same in Chicago. Been awful, but I saw International Falls was 95 the other day! I have a daughter in Rochester by the way.
-
RE: The portal.
@drgnslayr Dreary weather all week, no sunsets!
@ImmunoHawk Ridiculous. Keep looking at calendar saying end of may and thermometer doesn’t match. I’ve got a spectacular front porch that should be useful by this time of year and just can’t sit out there yet.

RE: The portal.
I’m sitting on my roof and not coming down until Self gets Williams to Lawrence. My boss will understand. My wife may not.

RE: The portal.
@PharmacyHawk Thanks, but that’s why I rarely read the recruiting news, just like I don’t watch important game preview shows because 5 dudes pick one team and then the other one wins.

RE: The portal.
This kid is sure taking his time. Doesn’t he know that adults all across America need him to make his decision NOW? Like how rude.

RE: Jacque Vaughn... Thoughts?
Roy probably gets his ring in 97 if Jerrod Haase didn’t try to play with a broken wrist. He played 14 minutes, well below his average. Only scored 3. That game he did make 1 basket, a 3 showing it wasn’t totally an impediment, but reading recently about it KU believes it was a game changer. Still the worst loss in my KU fandom, with 2003 a close 2nd.
What’s different and scary (LOL) for our future is Bill Self was a no doubt about it great hire at the time. He’s still the BIG’s win % leader but obviously a smaller sample size (102 games). If Vaughn does become the successor as some suppose, he doesn’t have this college cred on his resume. It’s the unknown. Williams was a rookie HC, so there was some unknown there too of course.
-
RE: Jacque Vaughn... Thoughts?
@dylans Embiid, OAD, Wiggins, OAD, Chalmers 2 + national Champ, Morris both 3 years (?), Oubre OAD, Braun 3 + NC, Selden 3 years (?), Dick OAD.
Williams guys hung around enough for us to get to know them. Wish Williams guys could a made some FTs in 2003 or to me at least it’s a clear cut argument in his favor.
-
RE: Jacque Vaughn... Thoughts?
@nuleafjhawk It’s an interesting question. In terms of producing top NBA talent, I’d give the nod to Roy…a very slight nod. Hard to argue with Pierce, Raef, Jacque, Pollard, Kirk, Nick C, and Gooden. Selfs best of course won him 2 rings, but are slightly less strong overall NBA guys…maybe?
-
RE: Jacque Vaughn... Thoughts?
I just asked it on another thread, but will ask here. If Self was coach in 94 or whenever Jacque was coming out of HS would he have recruited Vaughn?
-
RE: Norm Roberts Retires
He’s a very cerebral guy if I remember correctly. Has KU ever missed on a coaching hire? I mean Naismith was kind of bad, especially for an inventor of the sport and everything. Wasn’t around for Ted Owens, but looking at his stats and I see he’s a bit better than I realized. Maybe he lost his touch towards the end?
-
RE: Norm Roberts Retires
We need to shave any Beard rumors right now.
-
RE: Norm Roberts Retires
I’d agree to Danny, Frank and Sherron if we could let them all play instead of coach.
-
RE: Gas BBQ grill problem. Got a fix?
I don’t work for Weber, I promise, but I’m gonna sing their praises. You get what you pay for and after throwing away some piece of crap that lasted a year in Louisiana humidity I bought a 300 dollar Weber Spirit. That was in 08. I’ve replaced the drip/flavor bars once. That’s it, still works beautifully. Even heat, amazing grill. I just unscrew the gas when it’s not working right and screw it back on and it works well.
