      @Crimsonorblue22 Details on deaths 8 and 9 are not yet public. Ages of the first 7 dead: 81, 60, 89, 92, 73, 63, 79.

What we are being told is mortality will be higher for the elderly and / or those with diabetes or cardiovascular diseases. Men are a bit more at risk than women. Children can have the virus and be contagious without symptoms. In infected areas children are not allowed to visit the elderly in retirement homes.

@drgnslayr I logged back in after months just to say how surprised I am at your take on the Coronovirus.

“the reality is that the death rate will lower maybe even below Type A and B influenza.” Where do you get that?!? The flu kills at a 0.1%. France now has over 600 sick and 9 deaths: that is 1.5% already, and we know of those 600 not everyone will recover.

“why don’t we do something about flu A and B?” You mean like vaccines, that we develop and ask everybody to take every autumn?!?

If anyone wants some more objective takes on what is in store for the USA, and if you don’t trust China, try looking at what is happening in Europe. There is no way things will go better for you than in countries with universal health care. The people who are uninsured or underinsured and cannot afford treatment will infect more people than if they were taken care of.

I beg to differ: on this one,

      Larry Keating BITB

Keating has been a non-conference RPI wizard all the time Self has been our coach. I remember a journalist writing about KU “feasting on decent mid-majors”.

Keating was Senior Associate Athletics Director until July, 2011 and basically retired, but was asked to keep scheduling basketball and football games.

I don’t see any updates out there on her travel travails. The only Air France flight out of Abuja left very late last night and got into Paris at 8:30 this morning Paris time.

The Air France strike is today, Friday. I imagine her being on the flight to Atlanta leaving at 10:30. That flight is still scheduled. It may even be operated by Delta, in which case the strike is irrelevant. Assuming that flight, she would arrive in San Antonio at 5:30 P.M.

@HighEliteMajor You’ve already responded positively to my ideas, so thanks. I do think we need to distinguish between fouling Doke and sending in a designated fouler. We should no longer tolerate an end of bench player coming in just to foul Doke. If that happens, either send in Mitch or have Doke avoid the fouler so that any foul becomes blatantly intentional.

Now, if “real” players foul Doke, that is part of the game and Self needs to make the tough decision. You are addressing that situation I believe, not the designated fouler.

@welladjustedhawk … When aiming, you want one eye to dominate a bit…

When my daughter started learning archery, the teacher found she had a dominant left eye even though she was right-handed. She aimed much better shooting left-handed.

It would be interesting for Doke to test which is his dominant eye. The test is extremely simple and takes seconds: form a circle with both hands, stretch arms out and put the circle around an object about 15 feet away. Now close each eye in turn: the eye that is open when you see the object is the dominant eye.

If Doke has a dominant left eye, that would explain a lot.

    • RE: Bill Self - cost us the game?

Oh I just thought of a funnier solution.

Doke’s assignment on offense is to keep as far away from the walk-on as possible, period.

Imagine the guy chasing Doke all over the court trying desperately to foul him while the teams are playing 4 on 4. The burden would be on Kruger to stop the circus, and in case of a foul Self could easily argue it was intentional. (I assume off the ball fouls can be intentional?)

Even the East Coast media would have to talk about that game…

P.S. My ideas are only to counter fouling specialists and make the other team beat us using its normal players.

@jaybate-1.0 I accept all you say, however my objective was not so much to blame Self for the past but to make a suggestion for the future.

Blatant late-game fouling by a fouling specialist who can’t do anything else can be countered. Self only has to counter it once, then coaches will stop doing it because it is a “dick move” unless it works.

Countering blatant late-game fouling will take psychological pressure off Doke too.

    • RE: Bill Self - cost us the game?

Folks, please tell me why this would not have worked:

      • Walkon fouls Doke
      • Self puts Mitch in against the walkon : MUA
      • Every time Kruger sends the real player to the scorer’s table, Self sends Doke.
      • Every time Kruger sends the walkon to the scorer’s table, Self sends Mitch.

Kruger then has to decide: do I poke Doke with a real player or do I stop fouling?

This seems so simple. Instead of playing “your best player” you play the biggest MUA. (By the way @jaybate-1-0 , is MUA the right term? and what does it mean already?)

In a year when we are vulnerable, I think it’s better to have more than one opponent with a chance at the Conference title. More good opponents may mean more losses for us, but also more losses among them. If we hold serve at Allen and the other contenders have home losses, that may save us at least a piece of the Big 12.

Think of it as the Olympics effect. Have the summer Olympics every year and the impact would not be the same.

@BShark Yes and no. See https://kuinfo.ku.edu/what-are-qualifications-jayhawk-basketball-player-must-meet-have-their-jersey-retired-and-hung

According to the Kansas Men’s Basketball Media guide: The original criteria for a retired jersey included KU players named college basketball player of the year, most valuable player of the NCAA Tournament or being named a four-time All-American.

The list was expanded in 1997 to include Ray Evans, who holds the distinction of being an All-American in both football and basketball.

The criteria was expanded prior to the 2002-03 season to include consensus first-team All-Americans, two-time first-team All-America selections and Academic All-American of the Year.

In 2006 legendary KU radio man Max Falkenstien was added to the rafters to recognize his 60 years of brodcasting KU athletics.

Having said all that, here is a Feb 2009 quote from Coach Self: “There is really not a criteria other than the greatest players that play here deserve to be considered for that.”

Mario met the original criteria, as does Frank.

Thanks for the correction. I don’t get the part “this was long before MU left the conference”. There is no relation between Self’s dad’s idea and Missouri. That was my whole and only point. Again, the article claims Self was inspired by his dad’s idea to play a charity game. He - Self not his dad - then chose Missouri as the most expedient opponent.

I hope that is clear and that no one will think Self’s dad had anything to do with the choice of Missouri. Right or wrong, Coach Self alone determined that Missouri was the best (or only) choice as opponent.

@JayHawkFanToo See this article: The real reason Bill Self is OK with Kansas playing Missouri — and just this once

“[Self’s] dad was then the head of the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association, and the idea was awesome in scope and spirit: every school from the highest levels of Division I all the way down through Division III, junior colleges and high schools would schedule one more game, with all the money going to Katrina victims…When the disasters hit, Self went back to his dad’s idea.”

So his dad’s idea (from 2004 and not related to Missouri) was the inspiration - but Self decided on Missouri.

Sorry, he was the starting PG for awhile, but not on the Finals teams. He may have started a few games then, but he was not “the starting PG”.

An interesting tidbit is that he was the entire Miami team for a few hours. Just before the LeBron “decision” all Miami contracts had expired except Chalmers and Beasley, and Beasley was traded a few hours before LeBron, Wade and Bosh became the Big Three. So Chalmers was the only player on the roster that day.

Remember that the one year wait is not a NCAA/college but a NBA rule and they can always play overseas as many do.

Funny that I never forgot that. I guess I need to mention everything I remember in every post so you don’t have to waste your time reminding me.

Just about every other career requires some or a lot of preparation before you can make a living, even McDonald’s requires you to start at the bottom and gradually move your way up the ladder. Why is it so unrealistic to expect an athlete to take a few months preparing before joining the League and making millions?

It’s unrealistic because of what has happened in reality. Athletes sure they are worth millions, often coming from families not well off, are tempted by unscrupulous folks who want their cut of the future bonanza.

I personally prefer the baseball rule, you can go to the Majors out of high school but if you choose to go to college you have to wait 3 years. As good or better rule than any I can come up with.

Different sports with different learning curves, but something like that would be fine with me. My point was, if we’re waving the freedom flag then give the HS senior the same “test the waters” option that underclassmen now have.

Not complaining if being light helps him transition, drive and defend, but what about rebounding? We’ve had wings in the past, starting with Rush, that were decent to good rebounders. If we have a lightweight 4 and Svi plays the 3, are we just going to depend on Doke?

Not to mention Doke is a shot blocker, and the blocker is rarely in great position to rebound the miss after altering a shot.

      OK, I accept that, thanks.

Can we also stop pretending like this is a one way incident with Josh doing everything and Calvert doing nothing wrong. She was the instigator in this event and a big part of why She’s no longer apart of the women’s team.

Who is “we”? I never pretended Calvert did nothing wrong. I did say that was no excuse. Difference.
