    • Stepping Away

Hi gang. Haven’t been able to post lately. Wish I could join in the conversations, but I’ve had to step away for a while after the sudden passing of a close friend earlier this month. As I help his family and friends deal with the loss, chatting about sports just hasn’t felt that important these days. Times like these make you realize what really matters.

I hope that sometime soon I can return to the board and share my comments. Meanwhile, everyone take care, and be sure to give a hug to your loved ones.

Best of luck to the Jayhawk men’s and women’s teams. Rock Chalk.

    • RE: Stepping Away

Hello again. As I return to the board, just a quick and heartfelt Thank You to everyone for your kind words and condolences while I was away. Your support is much appreciated. In return, I want to pass along my own condolences and support to those of you dealing with your own personal losses.

Nice to know that social media can be used for healing and positive things…not always the case these days.

Of course, KU’s run to the Final Four has helped a lot as well. Look forward to joining my fellow Bucketeers online this week as the Hawks go for it all in New Orleans. “Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler!”

HAWKFAN ANNOUNCES RETURN FOR ANOTHER SEASON

Sources close to kubuckets.com confirm that longtime University Of Kansas supporter nwhawkfan has announced that he will return to the chatroom for the 2020-21 season.

In a statement released today, Mr. Hawkfan said: “I’ve talked it over with my family and friends, and we all feel that this decision is the best one for my long-term future as a Jayhawk fan, mental health notwithstanding.

“I had considered offers to take my talents to the NBA, but I’m convinced that this is the right decision. Besides, I’m still pissed that they moved the Kings out of Kansas City and the Sonics out of Seattle.

“I briefly thought about following the G-whiz League, but writing posts about marginal pro players does not quite hold my interest when compared to the glory and tradition that is KU Basketball. I also could have turned my literary attention to the WWE, but I am somewhat hampered by my aversion to bad acting.”

“I wish to thank all of my fellow kubuckets contributors for helping me make this decision. I’ll continue to sharpen my skills in the offseason through daily workout sessions with my thesaurus, as I strive to help bring another national championship to KU.

“Finally, while the stay-at-home order remains in effect, I’ll continue to consult with Doctor Fauci, Doctor Oz, Doctor Seuss, Rug Doctor, and especially Doctor Pepper and Rum, in order to make myself a better fan and contributor.

“Please forward all media inquiries to my agent….oops, I mean my distant cousin.

“Stay safe. Thank you. Rock Chalk Jayhawk.”

Regardless of your politics, all Jayhawks should send out a great big Thank You to Stormy Daniels. Highest 60 Minutes TV rating fin ten years.

Love hearing all the memories about Max from everyone on this board.

As a kid in the Sixties, Max’s voice was my introduction to the world of Jayhawk basketball and its long tradition. I think of him and Don Fambrough as the two KU “lifers” that I grew up with. Another KU legend gone, but one never to be forgotten.

Don’t know if anybody watched the Grammys on Sunday night, but one commercial caught my eye. Rather appropriate for the Final Four.

Almost missed this among all the football hoopla…

The 2019 winner of the NCAA 10,000 meters ran the New York City Marathon in a time of 2:23.23, pulling away late to finish seven seconds ahead of the runner up from Israel. Her time was less than a minute off the course record. On a hot day no less.

    • Hey, Anybody Got A Couple Of Peach Baskets?

On this date in 1891, Doc Naismith staged the first basketball game at the Springfield, Massachusetts YMCA.

A description of the scene, from “The Basketball Man” by Bernice Larson Webb:

"The first basketball game in history…was played in a YMCA gymnasium with a total floor space approximately forty-five feet wide and sixty-five long, and a playing field approximately thirty-five by fifty feet. Lights set into the ceiling were dim. Boundary lines of the basketball court were imaginary ones, with Indian clubs, dumbbells, and all the other gymnastic apparatus shoved hastily out of the way against walls and into corners. The equipment was simple - a ball and a pair of peach baskets…The uniform was long trousers and short-sleeved jerseys.

"There were nine players on each team…a goalkeeper, two guards (right and left), three center men (right center, left center and center) two wings (right and left) and a home man. or goal thrower, stationed in this order from the goal…equivalent, in modern terminology, to three guards, three centers and three forwards.

"Although Naismith rules called for both a referee and an umpire, he served as the sole official in this game, and probably found that more penalizing was necessary than one man than could handle fairly. Fouls, indeed, far outnumbered scores in this first trial game of basketball.

“Furthermore, because the bottoms were left in the peach baskets, a scoring ball would remain in the basket, ten feet above the floor, until someone got it out. Naismith, undaunted, asked janitor Stebbins to get a stepladder and take care of that problem. Stebbins was on hand with his ladder, therefore, to recapture the one ball that tumbled into a peach basket, effectively aimed by William R. Chase from near mid-court for the single point of the game.”

      HAPPY NAISMITH DAY !!!

    • RE: Let the slobberfest begin

An observation or two as we head into tomorrow.

As the only team left that’s west of the Mississippi (heck, the only one left of the Appalachians), you’d think KU would get more than token attention from the national media this week. But I’ve been shocked (though not surprised I guess) at the virtual silent treatment for a school with multiple national titles, most notably from ESPN (Eastern Seaboard Propaganda Network). The only mention I’ve seen about KU this week was a Sportscenter flashback to a game we lost to Villanova in 2005 when we were ranked Number One. Seems like we got a LOT more national coverage during the regular season. Duke, Carolina, and even Nova are sucking up all the oxygen in the press room.

This kind of thing isn’t limited to the men’s game. A friend of mine from Stanford is upset that the defending national women’s champs are getting pretty much ignored in favor of UConn coach Geno Auriemma, yet another ESPN darling. Even South Carolina (top-ranked for most of the season) isn’t getting as much attention as he does.

Yep, no East Coast bias here.

Leach was as good of an interview as he was as a coach, maybe better (and he was a pretty good coach). His press conferences could go off on any number of tangents, like when he’d give a soliloquy on pirates. You wonder what kind of teams he would’ve had if he didn’t have to recruit players to out-of-the-way places like Starkville and Pullman.

Saw a nice shout out today on Pardon The Interruption to Royals great Amos Otis, as he celebrates his 75th birthday.

One of the best deals the franchise ever made…Joe Foy to the Mets for Otis in 1970. Amos would go on to be an All-Star center fielder in his first four seasons with the club. (Foy, meanwhile, battled drug problems and was out of baseball the next year.)

Otis scored the last run ever at old Municipal Stadium in 1972. He sometimes got lost in the shuffle among all the players on those great Royals teams of the '70s and early '80s, but still managed to make his mark and helped lead the team to four division pennants and a trip to the World Series in 1980, where he hit .478 with three homers. He had great speed too…once stole five bases in a game.

      Happy Birthday Amos !

Not only did she set a new school record, she broke a 30-year-old meet record to boot !

ESPN2’s been carrying the meet live. It was cool to watch her race at Hayward Field, a neat old venue I visited a few years ago. It’s sort of track & field’s version of Allen Field House. This is last major meet there before they tear up the track and rebuild the facility.

    • Bill Russell

I’m saddened to hear the news of Bill Russell’s passing.

As a youth I’d always root against him whenever his Celtics played Wilt Chamberlain’s Philly teams, but I never doubted Russell’s superior skills as a defender, rebounder and all-around great player. It wasn’t until much later that I realized that he was an even greater human being, as he fought for racial equality and human rights, often in the face of vicious hostility.

And as for Wilt, I came to find out that the two of them were good friends later in life, despite a falling out that lasted a number of years.

When I moved to Seattle many years ago I discovered that he was already established in the community as a mentor to younger players and coaches. I never got to meet the man, though I’d see him once in a while at games and events around town. The closest I got was when I worked briefly for a company where he had an office. Unfortunately our paths never crossed. Just as well…I would have been tongue-tied if I ever did meet him.

What a player. What a man of substance. What a legend.

And I’ll never forget that laugh.

Rest well, Mr. Russell. You were a winner on and off the court.

As someone who lives in the Seattle area, I’m surprised how quickly the needle has gone from Prudence to Panic.

FYI, nearly all of the deaths in Washington state have been elderly patients with underlying conditions, most at a single suburban nursing home located nowhere near the Seattle U. campus. The actions by Chicago State and UMKC seem way over the top.

    • Jacque

With Stave Nash’s departure Tuesday, Jacque Vaughn is back to being interim coach of the Nets.

He held a similar role in the COVID-shortened 2020 season after Kenny Atkinson was let go, then went back to being assistant coach (with a raise) after the Nets hired Nash.

All I can say is “good luck.” This team that was supposed to be a title contender has crashed and burned spectacularly. Trying to win with the so-called Big Three of Durant, Simmons and Kyrie was always going to be a recipe for disaster due to the egos involved…and that doesn’t even include Kyrie’s bizarre off-court behavior.

To make things even worse, the buzz is that the Nets’ next coach will be Ime Udoka, recently suspended as Celtics coach for what was called an “improper” relationship with a female Celtics staff member.

Meanwhile, once again Jacque, ever the good Company Man, won’t get a realistic shot at the job full time.

If Jacque can do anything with this mess and even come close to turning things around, he needs to jump off the sinking ship and go to a team that doesn’t take him for granted.

    • A Fan's Odyssey

This past weekend series between the Royals and Mariners in Seattle brought out a lot of mixed emotions, nostalgia, etc. from yours truly.

It was great to see a bunch of KU Alumni at our local chapter’s event on Saturday night at Safeco Field.

Then on Sunday Nick Collison (R.I.P. Seattle Supersonics) threw out the first pitch. Tough day for hitters on both sides. The Royals’ starter, Brad Keller, pitched great…he threw a complete game and only gave up one run. Trouble is, he was pitching against the Mariners ace James Paxton, who threw an 11-K shutout. (Appropriately, the British Columbia native won on Canada Day.)

In a few weeks, it’ll be 40 years since I moved from KC to Seattle. The night before that move, as I packed my worldly possessions into my lime green ’71 Chevy Vega hatchback, I took an occasional glance at the game of the week on ABC Monday Night Baseball with, as luck would have it, the Royals playing the Yankees.

Even Howard Cosell’s endless droning couldln’t keep me from following the game. (Dennis Leonard outpitched Dick Tidrow and the Royals won 5-2).

Once I got to Seattle I tried to follow the Royals as best I could, but in those pre-Interweb, pre-ESPN days, about the only way I could get any news about them was to troop down to a newsstand downtown once a week to get a copy of the Sunday KC Star.

A couple of months later, the Royals came to town and I went down to the gray dismal Kingdome to root them on. Maybe it was the sterile atmosphere, the paltry crowd of 6,000, or perhaps it was Frank White giving me an ugly look when I yelled some encouragement his way.

By the time they finished that season with yet another playoff loss to the Yankees, I kind of soured on baseball for a time. It was all well and good that they made it to the World Series a couple of years later, but my heart wasn’t really in it anymore.

Gradually I started to cast my lot with the Mariners. What the hell, they were the local team, and I tend to root for the underdog anyway.

Those early expansion M’s were pretty bad. But it wasn’t like I’d never rooted for bad teams before. (After all, as a kid I put up with 13 straight losing seasons by the A’s before Charlie Finley hauled them off to Oakland just as they were getting good.)

After a time, the Mariners became my main team. Of course I rejoiced when the Royals beat the Cardinals in ’85, but that was almost as much of an anti-St. Louis thing as anything else. ( I can remember going on childnood vacations with my folks and trying to pick up a Kansas City A’s broadcast, but as we drove through those small towns in Kansas and Missouri, the only thing we could get on the radio was that damn Harry Caray calling Cardinal games. But I digress…)

Anyway, by the time the ‘90s rolled around most of my Royals heroes had retired. Meanwhile, the M’s were building a team around guys like Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez and Randy Johnson, and managed by Lou Piniella.

(Another KC connection…on the Royals’ first Opening Day I skipped school, walked about a mile to old Municipal Stadium, and watched a rookie Piniella go 4-for-5. They won in 12 innings, but I missed the ending ‘cause I had to catch the last bus to my neighborhood! Years later I ran into Lou at an M’s Fan Fair. He got a kick out of finding a Mariners fan who was there at his first MLB game.)

So while I still hold a warm spot in my heart for the Royals, I’m still waiting for that first Mariners World Series game. Maybe this year?

If not, well, Cubs fans waited twice as long.

      I ain’t getting any younger, though…

What an array of stars…Philly also had Doctor J., Doug Collins and Mo Cheeks, versus the Sonics’ Dennis Johnson, Gus Williams, Jack Sikma and Downtown Freddie Brown. An epic battle that went into OT, with the Sixers finally winning.
