    • Stepping Away

Hi gang. Haven’t been able to post lately. Wish I could join in the conversations, but I’ve had to step away for a while after the sudden passing of a close friend earlier this month. As I help his family and friends deal with the loss, chatting about sports just hasn’t felt that important these days. Times like these make you realize what really matters.

I hope that sometime soon I can return to the board and share my comments. Meanwhile, everyone take care, and be sure to give a hug to your loved ones.

Best of luck to the Jayhawk men’s and women’s teams. Rock Chalk.

    • RE: Stepping Away

Hello again. As I return to the board, just a quick and heartfelt Thank You to everyone for your kind words and condolences while I was away. Your support is much appreciated. In return, I want to pass along my own condolences and support to those of you dealing with your own personal losses.

Nice to know that social media can be used for healing and positive things…not always the case these days.

Of course, KU’s run to the Final Four has helped a lot as well. Look forward to joining my fellow Bucketeers online this week as the Hawks go for it all in New Orleans. “Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler!”

HAWKFAN ANNOUNCES RETURN FOR ANOTHER SEASON

Sources close to kubuckets.com confirm that longtime University Of Kansas supporter nwhawkfan has announced that he will return to the chatroom for the 2020-21 season.

In a statement released today, Mr. Hawkfan said: “I’ve talked it over with my family and friends, and we all feel that this decision is the best one for my long-term future as a Jayhawk fan, mental health notwithstanding.

“I had considered offers to take my talents to the NBA, but I’m convinced that this is the right decision. Besides, I’m still pissed that they moved the Kings out of Kansas City and the Sonics out of Seattle.

“I briefly thought about following the G-whiz League, but writing posts about marginal pro players does not quite hold my interest when compared to the glory and tradition that is KU Basketball. I also could have turned my literary attention to the WWE, but I am somewhat hampered by my aversion to bad acting.”

“I wish to thank all of my fellow kubuckets contributors for helping me make this decision. I’ll continue to sharpen my skills in the offseason through daily workout sessions with my thesaurus, as I strive to help bring another national championship to KU.

“Finally, while the stay-at-home order remains in effect, I’ll continue to consult with Doctor Fauci, Doctor Oz, Doctor Seuss, Rug Doctor, and especially Doctor Pepper and Rum, in order to make myself a better fan and contributor.

“Please forward all media inquiries to my agent….oops, I mean my distant cousin.

“Stay safe. Thank you. Rock Chalk Jayhawk.”

Nice tribute at halftime…they honored the last surviving architect of Allen Field House. 96 and still hanging in there ! Glad he had a great game to watch.

    • Thanks Stormy !

Regardless of your politics, all Jayhawks should send out a great big Thank You to Stormy Daniels. Highest 60 Minutes TV rating fin ten years.

Which means that the overtime managed to expose millions of otherwise unaware Americans waiting for the interview to the greatness that is Kansas basketball.

      Not a bad “opening act!”

    • RE: Max Falkenstien - Rest In Peace

Love hearing all the memories about Max from everyone on this board.

As a kid in the Sixties, Max’s voice was my introduction to the world of Jayhawk basketball and its long tradition. I think of him and Don Fambrough as the two KU “lifers” that I grew up with. Another KU legend gone, but one never to be forgotten.

      Rest in peace Max.

    • As Seen On TV

Don’t know if anybody watched the Grammys on Sunday night, but one commercial caught my eye. Rather appropriate for the Final Four.

It went something like this: “There’s nothing more beautiful than when talents team up to create harmony.”

      The ad was for…Remy Martin.

    • Jayhawk wins NYC Marathon

Almost missed this among all the football hoopla…

Former KU track star and NCAA champion Sharon Lokedi ran her very first marathon in New York on Sunday…and won it !

The 2019 winner of the NCAA 10,000 meters ran the New York City Marathon in a time of 2:23.23, pulling away late to finish seven seconds ahead of the runner up from Israel. Her time was less than a minute off the course record. On a hot day no less.

Way to go Sharon ! RCJH !

    • Hey, Anybody Got A Couple Of Peach Baskets?

On this date in 1891, Doc Naismith staged the first basketball game at the Springfield, Massachusetts YMCA.

A description of the scene, from “The Basketball Man” by Bernice Larson Webb:

"The first basketball game in history…was played in a YMCA gymnasium with a total floor space approximately forty-five feet wide and sixty-five long, and a playing field approximately thirty-five by fifty feet. Lights set into the ceiling were dim. Boundary lines of the basketball court were imaginary ones, with Indian clubs, dumbbells, and all the other gymnastic apparatus shoved hastily out of the way against walls and into corners. The equipment was simple - a ball and a pair of peach baskets…The uniform was long trousers and short-sleeved jerseys.

"There were nine players on each team…a goalkeeper, two guards (right and left), three center men (right center, left center and center) two wings (right and left) and a home man. or goal thrower, stationed in this order from the goal…equivalent, in modern terminology, to three guards, three centers and three forwards.

"Although Naismith rules called for both a referee and an umpire, he served as the sole official in this game, and probably found that more penalizing was necessary than one man than could handle fairly. Fouls, indeed, far outnumbered scores in this first trial game of basketball.

“Furthermore, because the bottoms were left in the peach baskets, a scoring ball would remain in the basket, ten feet above the floor, until someone got it out. Naismith, undaunted, asked janitor Stebbins to get a stepladder and take care of that problem. Stebbins was on hand with his ladder, therefore, to recapture the one ball that tumbled into a peach basket, effectively aimed by William R. Chase from near mid-court for the single point of the game.”

      HAPPY NAISMITH DAY !!!

Was out running errands and listened to some of the national radio feed with Kevin Harlan on Westwood One. Sometimes I miss hearing him do Chiefs play-by-play…less over-the-top and homerish than Mitch Holthus. (Plus he’s got Trent Green on the color commentary today.)
