    • Brandon Rush gets to play for injured H.Barnes

Ethan Sherwood Strauss, ESPN Staff Writer 0 Shares Email print comment OAKLAND, Calif. – The Golden State Warriors are now 18-0, after a gleeful 120-101 evisceration of the DeMarcus Cousins-less Kings.

This game had the usual staples. Stephen Curry made physics-taunting shots, scoring 17 on a mere six attempts in the first quarter. Emerging All-Star candidate Draymond Green did everything, everywhere, again. This time that ubiquity led to his becoming the first Warrior since Wilt Chamberlain to claim consecutive triple-doubles. Andre Iguodala was great yet again, and Festus Ezeli delivered productive energy, yet again.

The Kings started off feisty, till the fight was futile. For the Warriors, it was another blowout win, to extend a streak that’s stretching far as light.

Ho hum, same old Warriors, a team that now has outscored teams by 288 points through 18 games. For comparison, Houston, Golden State’s 2015 Western Conference finals foe, had outscored teams by 282 points after their entire 2014-2015 season.

So, how does a team that averages a blowout top itself? On Saturday night, joyous surprise came in the form of a quick strike Brandon Rush throwback game. He was called upon to replace Harrison Barnes (sprained ankle) in the starting lineup, to some surprise. He didn’t deliver much in the beginning but owned the third quarter like Klay Thompson in disguise. Rush scored 14 points in a 3-minute, 49-second stretch that was shocking, fun, and possibly cathartic.

Rush has a history here, having done nice work for a very different Golden State team, not entirely long ago. On the 2011-2012 Warriors, he was the rare good role player, a glue guy in a situation too shattered to matter. On Nov. 3, 2012, against the Grizzlies, a Zach Randolph shove sent Rush’s career into dormancy. He’d scored 2,639 points in his four-plus seasons before his ACL injury. In the two seasons that followed, he scored 109.

In the background, he has been a vocal part of the locker room, originator of the, “Get what you neeeeed!” catchphrase, meant to inspire work between practices. He’s a popular teammate, someone people here have been pulling for to finally reclaim what he lost. That was palpable in the frenzy of his 14-point explosion. Teammates were clearly looking for Rush, hoping to extend his moment.

Brandon Rush scored 16 points, including 14 in a brief stretch during the third quarter. Cary Edmondson/USA TODAY Sports After a dunk over contact, Rush was found for three consecutive 3-pointers. Then, during a timeout, interim coach Luke Walton and assistant coach Jarron Collins decided to carry the fun further, calling up “Elevator Doors” for the suddenly hot Rush.

“Elevator Doors” is a play that looks like its namesake. An offensive player runs off the ball between two screening teammates, who converge together to block his defender – the closing doors. It’s a play normally called up for the best of shooters, as it creates a 3-pointer on the move. You’ll see Curry get this play call. You’ll see Thompson get this play call. Something crazy has to happen for almost anyone else to ditch the stairs and take the lift. Since three straight 3s qualifies, Rush got the call, got the ball and … splash. The crowd went nuts, only outdone by a Golden State bench that might have accidentally created dance moves never before invented.

Walton explained the moment, saying, “When Brandon got hot and they called a timeout and we were walking out there to discuss [Jarron Collins] and I looked at each other at the same time. We both had it in our mind. That’s one of our go-to plays when somebody gets hot. It’s normally ran for Klay or Steph, so it was nice to be able to call for it for Brandon. They executed it perfectly and he knocked down the shot.”

Of the call, Rush said, “It was a big surprise. Luke said let’s stick with the hot hand.” Of the moment, Rush admitted, “It was the best I’ve felt in awhile. A couple years.”

The streak continues, bigger and better than ever. The Warriors continue to demur when asked about it, continue to focus on the present. In the meantime, their recent play has proved powerful enough to reclaim a man from the past.

    • Coach Self shuts out Shaka...again.

      Hey all KU fans!

I might be in the minority here but my loathing for Shaka just decreased by about 17.3%

      Hear me out ok?

Since Shaka has been at Texas he is 0 - 5 against KU. No Wins. NONE! 😆

Just makes me laugh to tears! Its so funny watching the post game hand shake… Ive rewatched the game twice already. Shaka just basically runs right by Coach Self after the handshake. ROFL!

So here is my rationale for not hating on Shaka as much.

KU has beaten them 5 straight times since Shaka took over. Do you think there might be a possibility that Coach Self, by winning so many consecutive games, is saying directly to Shaka. “Look son, you got lucky one time. Once!” It’ll never happen again. Not while I am at KU and you’re in MY conference."

So we just beat Texas again, in their house! It was a really good game, I thought. That Bamba kid is a freekin beast. Dok did a good job against him though. He just isnt on the same level athletically yet though. The only thing Dok has on Bamba is sheer size and strength. Once Dok got it into his mind that he was gonna do his work early to get good position in the paint, Bamba couldnt stop him. All he could do was try and block his shot. Which he did alot. But, Dok had some good moves on his own.

Im proud of our guys last night for grinding out that win. That was a big one, even though it was the first one of the conference season.

      Rock Chalk Jayhawks!

    • Frank Mason vs Lebron 12/6/17

I was browsing the box scores of the NBA games last night. Saw that the Cavs beat the Kings. Checked the box score and Franks line was impressive yet again. There was a clip playing of the highlights. One showed Frank drilling a mid range 2 pointer in Lebron James’ face after he switched onto Frank after a screen. Lebrons reaction after the made shot was fabulous.

Frank proving he is a badass.

It truly was a thing of beauty.

Just checked the box score for tonights game 76ers vs the Wiz.

JoJo put up a Double Double in 14 minutes!!! 11pts 12 boards! 1 block 1 steal 14 minutes! Wait till they give him the green for double and triple those minutes. If someone is gonna beat JoJo out for Rookie of the Year this year, I dunno who it could be. I mean, its way way early, not even regular season yet but Joel is killing it out there!

    • This far into the season, thought it might be time to post on here.

      Hey Jayhawk fans,

I haven’t posted on here in a while, at least I haven’t started a post on here in a while. SO, Ive been lurking in the back ground on here, reading mostly. What KU has done so far this season is impressive to me. Im not gonna ramble on, I just want to add a couple thoughts.

Devon Dotson reminds me of a hybrid between Frank and Devonte’. He is taller like DG but he has that bulldog mentality like Frank. How he drives with the ball reminds me of Frank and how he shoots reminds me of DG, not quite but almost. He is super fast with the ball in his hands like both of them. What amazes me is that this kid is a freshmen. He is playing like a veteran guard!
Will he stick around KU for another year or so? I think it depends on how far KU goes in the NCAAs.

Dedric Lawson is a stud. He reminds me of Wayne Simien. Big guy, got handles, can pass real good and score from everywhere. He is leading this team in points, rebounds and assists! How is that not POY material there!?

      Rock Chalk JAYHAWK!!

    • RE: We Out Toughed Them

I just rewatched the game from last night. Such a good game!! The refs made some absolutely godawful calls on both sides. But both teams played straight up, nothing really dirty that I saw. I gotta give Tennessee some credit, those guys are real good and they will be title contenders in March for sure. But, so will our guys. Dedric, Vick, Devon, all of them studs. KJ gave us HUGE minutes. And, personally I think KJ should get Garretts minutes. He isnt a liability on offense and he is a solid defender and can defend 1-4. Give the guy minutes! He deserves it after what we all saw.

@BShark HAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!! are you kidding?? Im serious, are you joking? We have a bunch of new players this year, there are bound to be growing pains. We all know that it takes most players at KU, who are new to Self’s system, a while to pick everything up, not to mention gel as a team and develop chemistry on court. Quit gloom and dooming and just enjoy the ride!!

Burlington Vermont is a GREAT college town! I loved living there for 3 years of my life. I made a ton of friends and the mountains are incredible to look at year round. There is lots to do outside. Lots. Any water sport you can think of plus hiking, skiing in winter, towns like Stowe and Shelburne are very near by and absolutely wonderful to visit. The local food there and the local breweries rival anything in Lawrence. I swear. And, Ben and Jerry’s corporate HQ is there. The building itself does NOT look corporate at all. It looks like a ski chalet. They love their home sports teams there too. College basketball and college hockey, soccer, lacrosse were the big ones there. The atmosphere at the basketball gym there is nothing compared to AFH. Its not close. I think it seats roughly 3500 and looks like a high school gym. Its cool though. For anyone wanting to take a vacation to a new place you’ve never been before, go to Vermont. You will not regret it.

That said, I fully expect our boys to kick their asses on Monday. They have a really good team. They will absolutely keep up with KU for the first 10 - 15 min. The Catamounts should win their league title and make another NCAA appearance.
