@Crimsonorblue22 That would be fun, but he’d get bored with my old man’s tour of Geneva, the part I know the best: “Here’s my favorite restaurant Chez Jacky. Oh wait, it’s closed now. That’s too bad. It was really good.”

RE: Switzerlandposted in General Discussion
I’ve spent a lot of time in Switzerland for work over the years. A Swiss person would reject the following characterization (emphatically, but politely). But one of the great things about Switzerland is that it can be like visiting 3 countries in one, but all with Swiss efficiency (and, alas, prices) — in the west, Geneva and environs are more than a bit French, in the southern Alps, a hint of Italy, and the north/east, Germanic. I hope you have a great trip!

RE: 2026 Recruiting ( Crazy but )posted in KU Basketball Recruiting
My understanding (from this forum) is that we lowballed him on the NIL and he didn’t want to pay (or leave on the table) several hundred thousand dollars to play at KU. He insisted on market value. I don’t see that as “mercenary”, just as “not an idiot”.

Good point. And it seems he was allergic to them as well.

RE: The Future of Jayhawk Basketball...posted in KU Basketball / Other NCAAM
My sense is that Self plays players that work hard in practice (and in games), execute his system and play D. This means that the most skilled players may not always be on the court. Remy early in the season is a great case in point. It also means that older guys he trusts sometimes get more PT than newer guys who are more skilled.

RE: Power Forwards/Stretch 4s of the Bill Self era peak offseason pt 4posted in KU Basketball / Other NCAAM
Perry was skilled, but my main memories were lack of physicality and vertical leap that kept him from rebounding, rim protecting and dunking as much as I would like from a 4. Same with the Morii, as I recall. Also, it’s been a while, but shouldn’t D Arthur be higher. I recall him as very solid.

I think we lost the VCU game the moment we ran through their huddle and lit their fire instead of ours

Can someone refresh my memory? Was it 2012 SG EJ or 2013 PG EJ who dick punched an opponent in a losing effort (Michigan?) in the tourney?

Mr. Mokeski is possibly the only KU player with an award named after him.

RE: KenPom Program Ratings (1997-2025)posted in KU Basketball / Other NCAAM
Sorry for the formatting. It looked great on my screen.
KP lists a bunch of other stats, including highest and lowest end-of-season KP ratings. We are tied for the highest (of course), but we also have the highest of the lowests, ours being 27 (2024), vs. 36 for Duke (2021) and 78 for KY (2008). We may bemoan the last two years (in particular), but that’s an amazing stat.

KenPom Program Ratings (1997-2025)posted in KU Basketball / Other NCAAM
He’s released program ratings based on an analysis of data since 1997. Here’s his description of how it should be used/judged:
“There is only one way you should judge these ratings and that is based on which coaching job would the average human take if presented with two options. If you were the head coach at West Virginia (31st) and were offered the job Indiana (17th), would you take it? Most humans would. If you were the head coach at Maryland (19th) would you take the job at Villanova (11th)? Maybe not by secretly negotiating your exit while your old team is fighting for tournament glory. But nevertheless!”
Interesting, in any case and sure to provoke discussion. Here’s the summary for the top 25.
1 Duke ACC +43.51 2 Kentucky SEC +40.83 3 Kansas B12 +39.84 4 North Carolina ACC +35.49 5 Arizona B12 +33.56 6 Florida SEC +32.01 7 Michigan St. B10 +31.79 8 UCLA B10 +30.21 9 Texas SEC +29.82 10 Connecticut BE +29.64 11 Villanova BE +28.52 12 Gonzaga WCC +26.52 13 Tennessee SEC +26.52 14 Baylor B12 +26.39 15 Ohio St. B10 +26.24 16 Louisville ACC +25.77 17 Indiana B10 +25.21 18 Alabama SEC +25.20 19 Maryland B10 +25.04 20 Michigan B10 +24.92 21 Illinois B10 +24.35 22 Wisconsin B10 +24.03 23 Purdue B10 +23.68 24 Syracuse ACC +23.68 25 Oregon B10 +23.39

Sure, first we offer some nice nipple clamps and then, the next thing you know, they have to be solid gold or diamond studded. Pretty soon, we’ll have to throw in some zircon-encrusted tweezers.

I watched the game on ESPN and they had Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi doing the commentary. They were good — solid in game analysis (until it was a blow out, with good color commentary and an entertaining back and forth. It was clear they like and respect one another as players.

@FarmerJayhawk believe me, I get it. I was an international trade lawyer for 30 years. This is akin to watching a frustrated 8 year old try to fix a computer by hitting it with a hammer

Yikes! Starting to feel like Rupp Rafters circa 2022-2024 in here. I could have sworn we won a national championship just 3 years ago. SlimShaddy54, I very much like your idea of those who are too weak to deal maturely with loss just opting out of watching games and/or commenting.

@nuleafjhawk agree and I’d be worried we’d be trading a Lamborghini for Yugo, or maybe an Audi, as well

RE: Third 2025 basketball seasonposted in KU Basketball / Other NCAAM
@SlimShaddy54 I agree 100%. For my personal amusement, I’ve taken it even further. This year, for the first year maybe since Danny, we’re an underdog — not a horrible seed (top half of the bracket), but our team seems to be in disarray and never really gelled. So I’ve made a decision to recategorize as a Cinderella, with the benefit of providing hope and smug satisfaction for every game we win, with little/no surprise or disappointment if we lose. This is going to be hard to pull off. Wish me luck.

Nice to see Pollard. Last time I saw his face it was a framed signed picture in a tailor shop in Bangkok. I asked the owner about the picture and he said “Scot’s great. Lots of fabric.”

RE: Theyre not diamonds but theyre in the roughposted in KU Basketball / Other NCAAM
@ImmunoHawk Spot on. I taught law for years. I’ve been thinking the same thing. Sometimes you can’t reach a particular class. The changes wrought by NIL and perhaps generational shifts have created, at least this year, a cohort that in essence is further away from HCBS and the rest of the coaching staff and less amenable to their general approach and specific techniques.

RE: Interesting Rumor/Noteposted in Behind the Wall
I agree with you. Thus my comment on how it’s important to plan for the future. Not sure why you feel the need to recap the discussion we both read or otherwise lecture me.

RE: Interesting Rumor/Noteposted in Behind the Wall
I’ve read the thread. You are correct — that is where it started. And then it took a bit of a detour. Preparing for who’s next is important, but I find the dump Self talk to be a bit silly — as was my proposal of Coach KU
-
RE: Interesting Rumor/Noteposted in Behind the Wall
If we’re seriously going to consider Pitino, why not just go all in on coaches we love to hate and grab Coach K out of retirement. We can rebrand him as Coach KU

RE: Bounceback night What a sightposted in KU Basketball / Other NCAAM
@approxinfinity I can definitely see your point of you. For me, it’s a much better experience without that input. And you make a good point about more criticism this year, but to me there’s a difference between critique and spleen venting. I welcome the former, but don’t tolerate the latter very often, at least not in adults.
-
RE: Bounceback night What a sightposted in KU Basketball / Other NCAAM
@approxinfinity Well I appreciate your caring. But it’s been years of pretty much the same stuff. There may (I stress may) have been some value added early on, but it’s been a drag on the site for years now. There’s a point where having a contrary new take slips into axe grinding.
-
RE: Bounceback night What a sightposted in KU Basketball / Other NCAAM
@StLJhawk Mine too. Block is a great feature. “Shouldn’t have to come to that” is a great idea, but it doesn’t account for the overly large gap in chronological age and emotional age that some of us exhibit. Also, selfishly for me (and a few others, I imagine), it will serve as a prophylactic measure to keep you from feeding the troll. The less these threads focus on him, the better.
