    • Why I hate WVU

Yes, I used the word “hate”. Used it somewhere else and was called a “meanie, not nice.” I don’t use the word often, some may even say I’m too nice, so I don’t get too worried when a snowflake doesn’t like my use of it. Here is why:

“When I was trying to get open, he held my arm and pulled my sleeve down,” Graham said of a West Virginia defender. “It was just hanging on my hand, so I took it off and threw it away.”

This lays it all out. They are dirty. They foul so much that refs swallow their whistle to call only the most egregious fouls.

Yes, they are called for more fouls than others.

      I. Don’t. Care.

Their constant fouling is rewarded by non-whistles throughout the game. And it is especially galling that touch fouls are being called on the other team to keep it somewhat balanced.

      32-2 FTA’s.

      I don’t care.

Every one of their games should see that type of disparity.

That said - they better make some noise in the big dance like the rest of the Big 12 teams. I’ll root for their success out of the league only because the Big 12 is so sorry in the post season.

      Rant over.

Stats aren’t normally my thing, but I’ve been inspired by some on the site to look at things more closely, so there are a few that I’m not sure about. But here it goes for discussion or commentary.

All stats are from www.TeamRanking.com. I’ve cut it down to the C5 and tried to remove duplicate stats in various categories. I’ve color coded based on the following:

Generally: Green/Yellow are good. Red/Pink bad. Players are listed in the order of Avg Min/Game playing time.

Green highlighted means this was a team high category for the player (from among all players). Yellow highlighted was best within the C5 subset of players. Green number is best of the 5 within a negative category (ex. TO, PF)

Red Highlighted - Team High (all players) bad. Pink highlighting worst among the C5 subset in a negative category; red numbers is worst among the C5 subset.

      upload-c842e08b-9a10-43cf-89d3-0e3144b6a610

      upload-6bcf3632-e37e-490d-904d-1bbf8f88ea0c

Here is my best attempt at classifying mere counts of categories that each player has for Positive/Best & Negative/Worst with Team Hi categories called out in [brackets]:

      Positives/Best (Per Min Stats):

      JT - 3 categories (FT%, FTR%, TS%)

      LL - 5 categories ( [Team Hi - RB/m, ORB/m, DRB/m], FG%, eFG%)

      CB - 6 categories (Asst(T), 3PM/3PA/3P%, Steals/PF, PF/m

      HM - 11 categories ( [Team Hi - Blk/m, Blk/PF, EFF, WIN] Ast/m (T), Ast/TO, Stl/PF, TO/m, GmSc, Blk/PF, DEF/PF)

      CD - 5 categories ( [Team Hi - Pts/m, FGM/m, FGA/m], FTM/m, FTA/m)

      Negatives/Worst (Per Min Stats):

      JT - 6 categories (Pt/m, RB/m (t), FGM, FGA, EFF, GmScr)

      LL- 3 categories (Blk/m, Blk/PF, DEF/PF)

      CB- 6 categories (RB/m (T), FTM/m, FTA/m, FT%, FTA%, DRB/m)

      HM- 3 categories (FG%, eFG%, TS%)

      CD - 8 categories ([Team Hi - PF/m] Asst/m, Stl/m, TO/m, AS/TO, WIN, Stl/PF, ORB/m)

Keep in mind order of player stats is in allotted average min/game. Realize stats don’t tell the whole story, which a major point was made after TTU game about the efficacy of a screen for example. But realize also, that within the constrained resource pool (minutes), the concept of opportunity cost should be considered.

I’ll admit that I know very little about the WIN, TS%, and GmSc stats, but find that these composite stat roll ups, along with EFF are pretty much in the Hunter Mickelson positive section with a couple of those being TEAM HIGH numbers. Find it interesting that he dominates the Positives and is tied for team low in Negatives.

As far as Diallo, guess it’s not surprising about his playing time, he’s come into games in limited minutes and taken his shot and not gotten others into the game (until more recently at least) even though he has hit at a decent rate/min. However, he doesn’t lead in either True Shooting % or eFG% and his overall negative categories lead the C5 pack not to mention big contributor at PF/minute that brings him to the bench as much as probably anything.

Bragg, 3 of his Positive categories are related to shooting and hitting a few 3 pointers. At this point in the career and on this team, probably not where we need help.

As has been point of contention among the board members: Jamari trailer has the fewest statistical Positive categories and is tied at 2nd worst in Negative category stats count. He gets the most minutes / game. Therein lies the controversy amongst us clearly!

That’s it for my analysis for now. I think we all agree to an extent that having the number of relatively talented bodies in the C5 isn’t a bad thing and could be good at times. Playing time allocation for both short and long term goals can be hotly argued and has been!

    • RE: Who came up with the term "leftist" anyway?

I’m more confused about where the term “Alt-Right” came from. Never heard it until the last presidential cycle and I follow politics pretty closely.

I’ll give a shot at answering your question. Often, the Left was called “Liberal”. For a growing segment of folks, there has been an attempt to grab back the mantle as a means of re-establishing the traditional political point of view of the Founders. The writers of the Constitution were considered liberals for their views of what constituted the best in human social and political arrangements. This is sometimes called “Classical Liberalism”. That’s one element. I lay out another element below.

So a question. With the Democratic Party moving further to the Left (realize this may be a controversial point, but believe it to be incontrovertible by the facts), how should that movement be described? How should those on the edges of that movement be called? “Leftist”, “Alt-Left”, or the more exacting label: socialist? As the Democrats consolidate around that pole of political thought, (again, I think this is incontrovertible with recent polling showing that outright socialism now has a majority positive view among Dems), how should we describe that leftward movement? One other “fact” in that this movement has accelerated in the last couple decades, Bill Clinton is no longer politically viable in Democratic Party - to the extent it’s true, he was part off the Conservative element of the Dem party formerly called "the Blue Dog Democrats - and now that is an extinct species. Hillary was made to basically renounce some of her husbands policies from the 90’s. One might argue that he slapped his name (i.e. Signed the bills) on Republican legislation, but he also then took credit for it - like welfare reform. That’s not possible in Democrat politics now.

@DoubleDD Exactly. He reduce the C5 to C2 and the offense stalled from the rate at which we had been playing at 1.02 points per possesession, our lowest rate in 7 games (if I quote JN’s stats correctly.

Landen Lucas was terrible in the first half, short minutes. He was better in the 2nd as OU got more tired, but like you, I think we payed a price on offense production thereby keeping the game closer than it needed to be.

Outcomes great. Loved seeing the players leave it all out there on the floor and they all did. Was probably the greatest regular season game. We won by 3. Could have easily gone the other way.

We could take losing if we felt the coach was putting in best position to win, and we just came up short.

Look at the negativity around shot making that comes out of Coach’s mouth and then gets picked up and parroted by players. Then we see things like best shooters not taking any 3 pt attempts. Starts at the head.

@JhawkAlum Coach Self does manage playing time and I think he’s screwing it up. Now more than ever, I attribute our big losses exclusively to him. He recruits players, coaches them up or not, and dictates style of play, and adjusts personnel / strategy to onging developments.

Last years loss to Kenucky was embarrassing, but they were a most talented team with summer playing (like we had this year). This years loss to MSU despite MSU’s ranking is unacceptable. I personally think Coach negligently did not adjust personnel and strategy to close that game. He kept the horses in that weren’t getting the job done. BG frustrated, Hunter M most likely frustrated, and as a fan, I’m frustrated. Seldon’ has played sub-par most of his career here and yet seems immune to accountability.

This makes it apparent that shooting and making the 3 is psychologically, in Self’s mind, damaging to other aspects of how the players play. Followed up with 50-50 balls that was a problem.

@jaybate-1.0 I know what you meant and really was just tweaking your nose!

However, I do think you sometimes ascribe too much advanced planning/scheming and control to Self i.e. To quote DD: “if anything happens on the court then it was by design of the coach”.

I will grant you that Self does adjust and try to find ways to play the hand he’s dealt and even beyond that analogy, works to influence the hand he’s dealt as every coach should.

In particular, I don’t ascribe our lack of inside game and the 4-1 line up as part a multi year grand master plan to incrementally reduce the strength of our bigs so he could move to a 4 man perimeter dominated game. Your analysis often lends itself to ascribing this level of control and planning to him as I read you.

Other than that, I enjoy your analysis and your strategy discussions. I see it as innovation, often reluctantly pursued versus master-planned.

Self was always until last 2-3 years an Inside-Out coach. Makes me wonder that he hasn’t completely adjusted to the new reality in his defensive coaching philosophy and practice. Not a knock, just this kind of thing has happened now for years And we don’t seem to have fully adapted. Obviously, there is always an element of execution vs plan that falls on the players but can’t help but wonder if one thing is drilled over and over, and the other is a once in a while instruction and players fall to form versus remembering instruction on case by case basis. Some teams and coaches seem to be much more oriented to both offensive and defensive mindset and player performance on the 3 line.
