Norm Roberts Retires

Congrats Norm on a great career here! Thanks for all your contributions to the program!
Now we get to see who fills that spot… Any ideas?
-
Vernon reports this has been in the works for a bit, KU apparently has someone identified for the role but not sharing at this time. Also interesting that replacing Norm may not be the only Assistant Coach on the move…
Doesn’t think it will take long.

First of many changes. Also not the first that was unofficially done this offseason…

Hell no to both. Would be setting the program back…
Hearing Buford will get promoted.
-
I’d agree to Danny, Frank and Sherron if we could let them all play instead of coach.

I’d be OK with setting the program back to the days of Big 12 titles and championships

It’s my opinion Bill’s staff will retire one at a time then Bill will announce. I don’t see a reason for him to stay.
-
@drgnslayr Like right now? or over the course of the next year? the next couple?

-
What are the chances Bill Self ends up a Spur?
-
Zero
-
Haha, man! In this age of non committal internet posturing you’re pretty confident @Crimsonorblue22
Im not saying this season. Im sure he is in it to win it this season.
-
@approxinfinity long a$$ season!
-
@approxinfinity She’s being nicer than I want to be right now. Trying my best to abstain!
-
@BShark not sure I follow though, thought everyone is being nice here. Do you think there is zero chance Bill ever dabbles in the league? I ask that because:
- College basketball is now pro basketball with handcuffs
- Pop just retired
- Bufford is Self’s best friend
If Bill were to do anything besides retire, seems like Spurs would be high on the list.
-
@approxinfinity Zero to none from what I’ve heard in the . past I wouldn’t see any reason to now this latte in his career.
-
@SlimShaddy54 yep. I get it. Just wondered if the equation might have changed since last he weighed in on that avenue.
-
Pop is 76, Bill’s a spry 62!
-
@approxinfinity IF he were to continue Coaching after he leaves/retires from KU then maybe— maybe BUT once he leaves KU pretty sure he is done period . --With him wanting to hang it up fairly early so he can still travel with family and be able to enjoy his grand children I seriously doubt it.
-
@approxinfinity Bill has told the press multiple times he isn’t one of these guys to try and become the winningest Coaches I personally think he is totally done after next season.
-
@SlimShaddy54 yeah. Tyler also lives in Texas fwiw
I’ll stop. Just saying theres a tiny chance if he is like “to hell with cbb landscape, but I’m not done”
-
@approxinfinity the Spurs already hired Pop’s replacement so yeah 0%

Again, i am not talking about this season.
Things change quickly, and posturing is a thing, we know.
We hang our hats on organizations we believe in, like the Spurs, wishing some things to be uncorrupted, but things fall apart.
Things also come together.
But nothing is static.
So proclamations of absolutes certainties and intolerance for counterpoint seem to be irrational takes.
Hope we can live in the middle.
Its a beautiful place.
If I am projecting and this is in fact a molehill, thats cool.
-
@drgnslayr were you suggesting this year? Seems like that ship has sailed. I assume you meant generally speaking, order of operations.

At this point, I think most people feel very comfortable/confident saying there is a zero percent chance of Bill Self ever being an NBA head coach.
Self isn’t going to coddle stars in the NBA and in San Antonio’s case, if management had to choose between Wemby/Castle and Self in a dispute, it would be much easier to replace Self than Wemby/Castle. Denver just fired Mike Malone less than two seasons removed from winning a championship and Jokic didn’t fight it when he had the influence to keep Malone.
Self’s health is also a big reason. The NBA is a much longer grind than college basketball. 6 months of 3 to 4 games per week, potentially two more months for the playoffs, and a month at the beginning for training camp/preseason.
Lastly, I don’t think anyone in the NBA is interested in Self as a head coach at this point. If Self wanted to continue coaching in some capacity, I could see him taking the Jim Calhoun route of going to a lower level in D2 or D3 where players aren’t going to those schools for NIL deals and Self could focus on teaching and coaching the game.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 appreciate the enumerated take. Makes a lot of sense
-
My 2cents: I see this as a planned succession planning effort. The assistants that will be brought in will be “interviewing” for the role of HC. Whoever stays will have established a relationship with the players that are crucial to retain as the head coaching position transitions. (The new ‘GM’ will be a part of this process as well)
-
@bskeet Player retention doesn’t seem to be a thing tied to loyalty of anything but the almighty dollar. See Flory our biggest mercenary for the upcoming season, I’m sure he’ll be expecting a raise the following year regardless of who is in charge.
-
Some interesting rumors floating around…
Former player crowd might get their wish for the second opening, but someone you wouldn’t think would take it.
