The rest of the season

  • @SlimShaddy54 #6 according to Bart - but I’ve seen with our own eyes, against team who rain 3s in a bunch, made 'em and beat us. 30% of 30shots - that’s like 30pts. I’m more worried about regression in team’s ability to score.

  • @jay4ever Agree with the scoring, we just go through to many stretch’s/ dry spells either just non made baskets or stupid turnover after turnover… Perfect example of this jus the other day against Utah- -we had just tied the score and then promptly I think had like four consecutive trips down the floor wit just really bad turnovers- -you just can’t do that.

I’ve beaten this into the ground like beating a dead horse, I just wish we could get back where it was run , run , run , and then run some more, we just bog down and stall out not fluid at all just looks really ugly a lot of times. Somebody mentioned sure it’s easy to run a weave offense, well guess what- - other teams have finally found away to beat that , they just back off / pack the lane let us run that dang thing until we are down to about elven / ten seconds on the clock and then we are in a position where at least 75 % of thee time we end up being forced to force up some ridiculous shot like Dickinson little two foot chippies he manages to clang or a last second three . So ya totally understand on the regression. I can remember when we used to score consistently in the low 80’s not we struggle for low 70’s

  • A lot can happen in a month. The strong non-conference resume will keep KU off the bubble I would think but it’s a fluid situation if it continues to spiral as it is currently. They were just a projected #4 seed which blows my mind but given the chance they could lose 4+ games coming up in regular season & Big-12 tournament means the margin for error is rapidly diminishing. Past blue-blood teams that missed the tournament probably didn’t have the resume KU currently has to keep them off the pressure cooker.

We’ll see if this team can rise above what’s in front of them. Tomorrow’s game has blowout potential so it would be nice to see a big effort from this bunch after Saturday’s debacle. Historically been great bouncing back after losses but this group is anything but fitting the historic narrative at this point. They desperately need a shot of momentum, or the steady decline is not fixable. Whatever team bonding activity was planned for yesterday needs to have an impact if possible. I can only think of Devonte Graham in this situation and how we desperately need someone like him to step up in the locker room and gets these guys back on the same page, playing together.

  • @DCHawker said in The rest of the season:

In the past four seasons, when Dickinson has been the go to guy, his teams have lost 14 (projected), 11, 16 and 15. Correlation or causation? His numbers have been pretty consistent each year, as has been mediocre team performance. He gives you high teens points and around double digit rebounds per game, but is slow and doesn’t hustle (vast majority of the time), provides no real rim protection, and is a defensive liability. I’m opting for causation - he simply doesn’t make teams better…

I haven’t been a fan of him from the get go. I think there is definitely something to the idea that force feeding this man the ball for 30 minutes a game has a negative impact on the overall performance of a team, even if he does get his 16 and 10. And when he has a bad game with that being the strategy… we get games like Utah…

No one on this team looks like they like playing basketball right now. They’ve GOT to figure that out.

I guess I will continue to bash Hunter until morale improves. Lol.

  • @benshawks08 I’ve been on Dickinson for awhile now. The guy is just- - just – so methodical/ - he is an absolute disaster on defense - he is a sloth , I have mentioned many , many times sure against smaller not as athletic if that’s what you wanna call Dickinson I don’t think he is athletic at all but against smaller guys SURE he will go like for 20 - - 25 points and like 10 plus rebounds BUT you match him up against same caliber talent , same size he is pretty much gone – even wash.

Even as a KU fan there are times even i Think Dickinson is a dirty player, I think he cries to the officials to much , just play big boy let you actions /play speak for you.

He is terrible from the three he makes one then look out his percentage is un Godly- the guy needs to lock in down low if that’s where they are running their offense through post up and finish with authority- -his explosion is like two inches he gets beat on the boards a lot by even smaller more fluid / athletic players , most of Hunters rebounds come flat footed . People complain because we run a slow down offense - – not the rest of the guys fault , hell we get down floor an have to wait for Dickinson to catch up three quarters of the time. I myself have thought since day one Dickinson was just a bad fit with this team.

  • Well, looks like we somehow remained in the Top 25 in AP and Coaches poll, barely. 23/25

A poor outing vs the multiple wifers Tuesday and that’s all, folks.

Suck it up, buttercups! Play like ya care, please.

  • So, i’ve been doing some common fan thinking (insert joke here) about how to fix things.

The only conclusion i can come to is: It has to be an attitude thing.

If we can beat Duke and a few other good programs, something obviously went right.

We certainly have flaws in our roster. But it is what it is. We can win games.

Now how to get things turned around, that remains a mystery.

  • @rockchalkjayhawk Duke in November when “Bill hasn’t installed the offense much or - we don’t guard anybody” is completely different than now

Team then = loose and even Bill granted a longer leash to see what he had under the bright lights

Team now = pissed off, different leashes for different guys even though the guys with the longer leashes f up as much as the newbies

People keep bringing Duke up and it was an incredible game but seeing multiple fans at TOS point out that’s how we are and then we get Bill’s standards and install and we immediately tighten up in a bad way. It’s sadly true more years than not and been exacerbated this year because we have guys that are 4-6 year guys and then other 3-4 year players who performed at other power 5 top programs

Bill botched this one and the team has also quit/revolted against him. Kj and d2 try but that’s about it. They are so limited it is pathetic but man don’t tell that to Bill as he will go to the grave that Kj is the most impactful player to ever play at KU and d2 is the greatest pg off all time. He’s delirious

  • @rockchalkjayhawk either that or other teams have gotten better and other coaches knew how to beat us.

  • Lawrence PD is savage on Twitter: “The roads around Lawrence aren’t great, but they also aren’t terrible. We aren’t currently working any crashes or slide-offs. However, it’s colder than KState’s national championship record out there, so maybe stay home anyway.”

Or this: “The Lawrence Police Department probably won’t be playing in any NCAA championships this year. Or any year. Just like KState.”

  • Hahhaa

  • Ok, after watching tonight, it seems like there’s one thing to do …

Ya got one thing for sure happening here: Self is trying to fit square pegs into round holes this season. And it’s just not working.

He’s trying to force players to play within his system. Ok, hard to argue against, except for the rotten stench.

I now see one solution. I mean there’s nothing to lose at this point, right?

Bench Hunter, insert Storr into tonight’s lineup and run, run, freaking run and gun.

Tell the guys there’s one rule: run. You get the ball? Don’t stop til you hit our backboard. Every time. Foul, turnover or bucket. I don’t care which. Sub often. Run!

We got the ponies to run. We don’t have the ponies to do whatever it is we’re doing now.

    Release the hounds, Bill!

  • @rockchalkjayhawk I’m not sure if he is trying to fit square pegs into round holes. To me it seems more like trying to see if any of these pegs can stand on their own. I think all he is trying to do right now is get guys to care and the more he tries, the less they care. But we may have ourselves in a cycle where the less they care, the less he cares, and the less I seem to care.

  • Wait, KU played last night?

Humanity is still humanity. To assert that a younger generation is incapable of caring is silly, imo.

We chose the wrong guys and Bill is either incapable of, or too unmotivated to figure out what makes them tick and find their best selves.

Everyone is culpable. Bill, his staff, Goff, the players, the fans.

    -1000 points for everyone!

    Booooooooo!

  • On a more positive note, I hope Bill will join our Fishing thread when he hangs up the sneakers

  • @approxinfinity He’d probably just fish from shore with a cane pole while the rest of us are out trolling.

  • @approxinfinity you haven’t heard ? - Coach is at Dick’s sporting goods buying his Rod and Reel RIGHT NOW- - think it’s one of those jim Dandys Zebco’s --202- ah the good ol days

Left his resignation letter inside a Boon’s Farm bottle in the middle of the Lake- -you GOTTA love it-- hope you catch a whopper Coach lmao

Oh , Oh , Oh , Uh -Uh - – Uh and he also had a little poste board just about the size like 18 x 24- - had a pretty simple message written on it Think it said to all you Self haters- - - ’ SCREW --YOU "- as he was holding it up while busting open another cold one, and counting his millions roflmao- - -ROCK CHALK

  • @approxinfinity What = makes these kids tik is this FRICKEN NIL – NOT the School or love of the game anymore-- Here today- - gone tommorrow–

OK what do w start the bidding with?- Cn w get a million-- million , million , million , million come on surely a Million to start what we have here is a fine 7’2 Sloth that can’t hit two foot chiipies and thinks s he is Steph Curry and hss a two inch explosion - – -what more could you want-- ok , ok how about half mil who is going to start the bidding?

  • @SlimShaddy54 Whoever dreamed up this NIL/PORTAL garbage should be hung up by the kahonas in the town square. Then lit on fire. But with diesel, so it’s a slow burn.

It’s ruined college sports. I know I’ve ranted about it too much, but it’s because i USED to love college sports. Now I’d rather watch a movie, go fishing, go antiquing, pickup trash on the side of the road, organize fallen leaves by size & color - anything. I’m not wasting my time on this garbage anymore. ( I will, but not as much time as I used to…old habits die hard).

From an old fart’s point of view - college sports should be college sports. They should not be paid. They’re already getting a free education. And that’s fantastic, because nearly every single one of them will not be a professional athlete. They’re going to need that free degree in the real world. That’s enough. They don’t need a salary. They don’t need anything but to want to play sports for free.

sure, fine. we can toss the square peg / round hole analogy. Something’s amiss. However we want to word it. I just want these guys to run! All but Hunter seemed well-suited for a run and gun style.

  • I just want to see some effort and basketball rotations that make sense.

No 3 centers lineup with Dajuan and Zeke. Just functional normal basketball rotations.

  • @nuleafjhawk Couldn’t agree more. I was just talking to a couple of friends of mine , One in California and the Other from Arizona- - both would agree because they agreed with me.

One thig one said was the only thing about Coach was he should be yanking Dickinson faster -you don’t want to play Defense then until you figure it out you can sit right here with me. I’ve said and they both also said this NIL ha absolutely ruined the College game

Hell start yankng Scholi’s bring their mom and Dad in tell them your pulling them and oh by the way do you have a check to pay for his tuition. My friend in Arizona is like you , he said he has a hard time watching College sports anymore, because it’s becoming just like Pro so he has a western collection of movies he is watching lol – -

You can tell they have checked it in , this team is done- how many wide , wide open three’s - -how many easy uncontested layups- -I shut it off with like eight minutes to go in the first half- -just sad

  • @TYOHawk Bill just can’t help himself as he truly thinks that’s the best lineup

  • The three big lineup was absolute bullshit. Nobody who wears crimson and blue wanted that. No one. Felt like Bill doubling down on some disciplinarian point, when everyone was tired of it. His reactions to these situations. His inability and unwillingness to compromise to salvage it, makes me feel like he is heavily considering retirement after this season.

  • Retire William! Bring in Dusty May this off-season if anything below is actually truth

    https://247sports.com/college/kansas/longformarticle/bill-self-kansas-basketball-postgame-quotes-byu-245883588/#2601950

“At one point he said basically BYU shot and made not high " shots. Basically fools gold…“

It was disrespectful to anybody who understands modern basketball. I understand he wants to teach lessons to AJ or Rylan but come on man…

  • Well, the entire sports universe is pretty much saying KU hoops is in a downward spiral and an embarrassment.

With locker room troubles, apparent player backlash and what not, this could actually be a defining moment – for the better.

The players surely value their good names, right? They have to re-energize after reading how lazy and unenthusiastic they play.

They can’t just sit back and be mocked like that, can they? There has to be positive change in effort soon! I hope at least.

  • @rockchalkjayhawk I’ve been noticing that more in the National media too. And even the rah rah KU fan feeds are pointing to our collapse. Hope we don’t lose out and miss the Dance this year, now that would be one for the record books.

  • @TYOHawk Honestly he’s just embarrassing himself, racking up atrocious losses while still acting like his favorites are legit and not the issue. He’s so out of touch with the game and it’s making him look bad but it’s his own arrogance

He had the number 1 nil, got exactly who he wanted from the portal and claimed “you’ll love this roster back in what October/November” - and then he mentally ruined two of the new guys he brought in to were supposed to be big contributors

  • @approxinfinity

That line of thinking- disciplinarian would line up with what Vernon reported about friction in locker room post Utah game. Of course, we don’t know for sure but hard to deny that wasn’t the case after the BYU game and Self saying that they needed to get away from each other.

Still, that lineup choice was awful and I’m just going to leave it at that. 8th different starting lineup combo of the year. Surprisingly they went 5-1 when Moore started and played 20+ minutes. But he’s appeared to be in the dog house for several weeks unless injury has really limited him.

I was wondering why Shak was in the doghouse myself, I was think that was the best version of this team.

Even though we didn’t start Flory over Hunter, I’d like to take credit for today’s win! Lots of running and gunning. You’re welcome 🙂

  • So far my end of season prediction is correct! Doesn’t even make me feel better.

  • I just watched the Houston game yesterday in the evening. I’ve got a lot of thoughts going through my brain about this team.

I hate to say that I’m encouraged by this team, but I kind of am… I think Bill playing Diggy 29 minutes goes to show that he is willing to play the best guys the most minutes. Diggy is one of the best 5 guys available right now. They played tight with the best team in the B12 on the road. They really are good enough to hang with anyone.

Where I think we are in trouble though is still just the Mayo/Juan issue. There is nothing coming from those two right now that is positive. We really need this team to get hot in Conference play. Nobody needs to win the B12 Tourney and find “something” more than this group. I think it really is going to come down to if Mayo can get confident again or not. He has lost that ability to hunt for his own shot. He’s not seeing the game well right now… But that could change.

At the same time, KJ has found another gear. If we can get this level of effort/production out of him moving forward I would not want to play the Hawks. One of the most dangerous 6-9 seed teams you’ll ever see.

If I were to guess, you’ll see a tight rotation again Saturday. Basically cut it down to 7 guys getting meaningful minutes.

I’ll say that no doubt it has been a disappointing season. We aren’t nearly as good of a team as I had imagined we would be. I thought with all of the depth we brought in that we’d be a top 5 team all season long basically. But the team didn’t gel. The coaches didn’t get the most out of the guys. The guys don’t play well together. Its really an unfortunate situation for everyone. I still think a team that took Houston to the final minute on the road is good enough to beat anyone in the country on a neutral floor. If we’re lucky, we’ll get some games in big arenas where the ball doesn’t go in the hoop.

My final thought, this team is due. The are due for a ball to bounce their way. They are due for the basket to look like its the size of the ocean against a good team. They are due to make that final play to win a close game. I’m still remain optimistic that this team can make a little run despite its obvious flaws.

  • Generally agree, even though we lost the last two games, we were in it to the end and weren’t embarrassed. It is the games that came earlier in the season that has everyone so down on them, so if they can keep this up and even improve a little they can make some noise.

Counterpoint is that when things aren’t going your way so often, it might be more than that they are unlucky. They also haven’t given us a real reason to think they won’t just as easily go back to giving the same level of effort seen in the BYU.

I am optimistic that maybe the team can make the 2nd weekend if we get matched up teams without bigs that can shoot, but I would be shocked by anything more than that at this point.

  • @Kcmatt7

Diggy was great on offense against Houston but just about every big shot he made was followed by a shot he gave up on the other end. His effort was great though and I’m happy he’s still fighting hard.

I do agree the Juan/Mayo thing is a major problem. Mayo wouldn’t even look at the hoop to shoot on several occasions he normally lets it fly. They are also putting him in way too many situations where he has to dribble to make a play, and he’s turned the ball over a ton lately. He doesn’t seem to be a confident ball handler which is shocking to me.

  • At this point a loss to Arizona might help us with tournament seeding. Because if it pushes us up into 11-12th seed in the dance, we avoid the 1 seed in the 2nd round provided we win of course. I doubt that happens though too. The NCAA seems to enjoy seeding blue bloods having a bad year at the 8-9 line so that they can get the juicy 2nd round matchup. UNC in 2022 is a good example. The season is likely to end like the last 6 or 7 besides 2022, but if we can increase our chances of moving on past the 2nd round by being seeded lower I’d take it. Maybe they’ll give us one of those extra 11 v 11 games in the dance so we have another chance to watch.

  • I think losing vs Arizona and early in the B12 tourney pushes us to a 8-9 seed. Win this weekend and at least 1 big 12 game and we are a 6-7 seed. Currently sit at a 6.8 seed rating on bracket matrix and that is always pretty close to accurate.

  • @BeddieKU23 said in The rest of the season:

Unfortunately too late to change the offensive scheme… But yes they need to get Mayo more catch and shoot situations rather than pick and roll. He’s got no confidence with that at the moment.

Diggy is a defensive liability, but at least he gives you a chance to go out punching. I’ll take his ability to score over whoever he is guarding probably 9 out of 10 times… He also stretches the floor and moves the defense. Gives Hunt and KJ more space. Probably lets you slide Mayo more into the catch and shoot role in the corners too.

  • Have we sunk so low that nobody’s even started a game thread? sigh.

Hoping the “seniors” can bring home a W today.

  • @rockchalkjayhawk I just did. Jinx!

  • Doh!

  • Haha same exact time. Good timing.
