Utah blowout

@kjayhawks i actually think youve been pretty patient this season given the carnage and flaming wreckage we have navigated.

Nice catch.

Almost 500 yards of offense. The issue isnāt moving the ball.

I take back what I said about JD6 being one of the better QBs in our programās history. He is one of the worst. He is Cozart, Crist, Bender level bad, and probably worse. Any illusion of him ever being good was caused by Grimm, Arnold, and Neal carrying him. He should not be starting at QB at any level of football. If he has any decency in him he will give back any and all NIL he has ever earned to the school.
He is good enough to win you games, which none of the others were. He is a notch above. But heās no Reesing.
He could have left and gotten a BAG and stayed (still probably for a bag). But heās a real Jayhawk in an era that doesnāt really exist anymore. So I respect him a lot.
-
@Kcmatt7 if we had an elite QB we are bowling the last two years. Iād take Bender or Stanley over JD they had much worse coaching and players around them.
-
Simply canāt get a 4th quarter stop - all season longā¦
-
Now this year I wouldnāt put most of the losses on the offense. But those games we had a chance late and threw picks or fumbled inside the 5 the possession before.

Jason Bean-he was our winning QB

Stanley threw 11 ints his senior year. He was not good.
-
Welp, maybe next year.
-
@patoh3 - Again
-
Well itās been another year of what if for Kansas football friends. Gosh Iām almost speechless, I had hope there for a bit. As Red says in Shawshank āhope in here is a dangerous thingā
-
Wow. iām finally caught up to the game. Absolutely jaw dropping. Shocking. Unprecedented to throw two interceptions like that in or near the end zone in scoring position? How is that possible???
This kind of play makes you wanna just quit being a fan of the program. They just make it so hard for us. Laughable to play like that.
And i havenāt read the thread yet. Did anybody criticize our half ass coach for ACCEPTING those Utah penalties in the 2nd quarter? Just idiotic. Canāt one of his assistants punch him in the shoulder and say WTF are you doing???
Sigh. We just have to grow up and into a real football team at some point. Will it happen?
-
@rockchalkjayhawk I think we fans should be entitled to compensation lol

Thatās the JD you all hate and I kind of hate it right now. Throwing it away? Throw it to the tuba section for goodness sakes.
Sadly he wasnāt throwing it away in my eyes. Receiver deked inside and he didnāt even see it.
-
Then you get to 4th and ten and just sit on it. JD isnāt a n average D1 QB sorry but thatās a fact at this point. Yes playing for longer than any QB in Kansas history he was able to get to number 2 on most records.
-
@Kcmatt7 JD threw 14 last season I believe and also lost like 6 fumbles

to sh*t the bed like that on senior night ⦠probably how weāll remember Danielsā career.
The question for next year is do we have anybody better to take over?
-
@rockchalkjayhawk thatās the problem like I said the two deep was loaded with seniors this season. A 3 win season is probably inevitable for next season and I would be okay with that if we had made bowls the last few seasons like we should have.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk Whoever takes over will be better. JD is so bad that it is impossible to be worse.
-
10/27 187 yards 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions for a 6th year senior. That maybe the worst line I have ever seen out of a guy with his experience. One of the worst QB performances in KU history IMO and I watched thru the 90s and early 00s

That was bad enough if it leaked JD had money on Utah, I wouldnāt question it.

ALL I WANTED WAS A BOWL GAME!!!

-
nope no blow out this year , we wwhere blowing them of the ball. Feel really bad for HiShaw he play his ass off- -same with williams- -huge gashes in their Defense
-
@SlimShaddy54 a guy has to wonder if Cole or Zeke start and play that game does Kansas win going away?
-
Iām going to limit my anger. Youāre welcome.
Iāll just say this - we rushed the ball at will all day. So whose bright idea is it to say "weāve rushed 85 yards successfully on this drive, now letās get right near the goal line and let Daniels throw an interception. Because thatās his specialty.
Thank goodness this season is over. And hell yeah, I wouldnāt shed a tear if LL was fired.
-
I am optimistic that we can bounce back next season. I do think there are good enough QBs on the roster already.
They need to beef up both sides of the line and absolutely drop a bag for an edge presence.
I would prefer we get to an identity that is focused on good defense and ball control offense. I think itās the best way for a program like KU to beat superior teams.
I do still think LL and co. can build a B12 contender
-
That was a cold, disappointing experience. Hard to know where the program goes from here.
-
Hereās how you win that game with a modest shift in execution:
1st quarter [11:20]: 3rd and 9 at the UTAH 25 ā Instead of throwing an interception, you take an incompletion and kick a field goal. (3 points)
1st quarter [2:16]: 4th and 10 at the UTAH 13 ā Instead of false start and forcing a re-kick (which you miss), you kick a field goal. (3 points)
4th quarter [13:39]: 2nd and goal at the UTAH 12 ā Instead of throwing an interception in the end zone, throw it out of bounds and eventually kick a field goal. (3 points)
4th quarter [7:52]: 3rd and goal at the UTAH 5 ā instead of throwing an interception returned for a touchdown, you RUN the ball, get stuffed again, and kick a field goal. (3 points)
With this shift, KU scores 32 points. Enough to win the game even without taking away the 7 points Utah scores on the interception for a 99yd TD.
I wanted better for the Seniors. I stayed to the (bitterly cold) end, but it was hard.
-
Still miles better than 5 years ago, but the last 2 seasons couldāve gone so differently.
See you all on the basketball side.
Rock Ckalk.
-
@bskeet Had they put me in as the redzone QB we would have won the game. I would have just kneeled and set-up field goals.

Thatās the problem for me, we have dumped hundreds of millions into this program. New stadium, new locker rooms and new indoor practice facility. All to win 5 games a season. Iām sorry thatās unacceptable and a losers mentality IMO. Itās something KSUCK would celebrate and hang a banner over. I donāt think Leipold should be fired yet but DK better have a U-Haul in his driveway before the end of year.
-
@bskeet another option to field goals is to run the damn ball. We ran for 300 yards today. Couldāve been 400 and a couple more touchdowns
-
@bskeet said in Utah blowout:

Apologies that you were there to see that live.
-
The most frustrating play was the 3rd and goal at the UTAH 5 with 7:52 left in 4th quarter (score UTAH 17 - KAN 14) ā You can run one more time and, if unsuccessful, tie the game on a field goalā¦and lean on the D which was doing great all day. Thatās conservative and itās pretty common for people to criticize those kinds of calls⦠but Utah actually brought on personnel that suggested they anticipated a passing play. So, getting aggressive there was a little too predictable, at least for Utah.
That play flipped the game.
Fans streamed out after that. It was crushing.
It felt like that was a 14 point play, even though we were only down 10 points with just under 8 minutes left to play.
-
Oh JD I tried to defend you and you let me down!
-
After some time to calmy reflect I think JD had some great but injury ridden seasons for us but was very bad these past couple years, possibly due to his past with injuries. I will try to remember him fondly but many games, including this one, marr my perception of him.
-
Some seasons its tough to get everything firing at the same time. There were games this season where JD was good and the defense sucked. And games where we did completed insane shit, like special teams giving up 6 points on a funbled punt, and there were games where the playcalling sucked. So, itās tough to pin everything on JD. He ended his playing days at Lawrence on a down note, and thatās unfortunate. But, if we had a little more stability in other areas of the game, maybe there would have been less pressure on JD. Who knows.
-
After cooling off hereās the deal with JD this season, he played good enough for us to win 7 games and make a bowl. I am 100% certain of that, the problem is he will be a guy that I remember as Tony Romo of college football. He buckled under pressure pretty much everytime unfortunately. He was terrible last season and this season at times I thought he was much better and passed that type of play. Today and against KSU he reverted back to his old self. It sucks twice as bad because a mediocre game today we easily win. Itās hard to swallow with his experience as well, we easily beat Cincinnati if the defense shows up at all. But that was the whole defense that had trouble. Not very often in football can you circle one player and say if he just does his job, we win. Today was that for Jalon Daniels. He was finally healthy to start last season and given the keys to this program. Itās disappointing but he did not move the needle forward at all IMO. Most of his big games were pre injury against inferior opponents at home. I wrote up the Jason Bean redemption post after we wrapped up the 2023 season. I hoped to do the same today for Jalon, but it didnāt work out. Very sad day for all parties involved. This maybe the most disappointing season in KU football history, right up there with last season and 2009.
-
JD is not the sole reason this team underperformed. I still am thankful for JDs contribution to the program. It sucks he went out like this.
-
@kjayhawks Should add the Mizzou game to another of JDās āgood enoughā games. Henderson dropped a pass on 3rd down at about midfield which would have been a first down. Down 4 with about 2:40 left, maybe. LL elected to punt. MU scored again. Lost by 11, but KU had a legit shot to win that game on that last drive. JD had a pick, but wasnāt horrible otherwise. (this is by memory, so may be off).
I hate to say it, but I think 4 years is long enough for a college athlete. Dajaun Harris sort of outstayed his welcome also, IMO. Too much history where fans remember every mistake.
-
@DanR Yes, I donāt put the Mizzou game on him in the slightest. It goes back to the old verbiage of āyou die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villainā . Good assessment of him and Juan, I think the coaches said these are our guys at this spot and we are riding their coat tails no matter what.
-
It took me a while to get here, Iāve warmed up to the Dajuan and JD comparisons. As QB you have a disproportionate impact on the outcome of a game compared to other positions. The position invites glory and scrutiny. Like the PG, the QB is the most direct link to the coach on the field, at least on offense; a PG at least as an opportunity to impact both ends of the court.
I agree with @DanR that 4 years is enough. In both cases there seemed to be a mental fatigue that set in by the end. Both DJ and JD are talented players, but Iām not sure either was fully mentally present their final year, and of course, both had pieces around them that variably, often inexplicably, melted down.
