Again, i am not talking about this season.
Things change quickly, and posturing is a thing, we know.
We hang our hats on organizations we believe in, like the Spurs, wishing some things to be uncorrupted, but things fall apart.
Things also come together.
But nothing is static.
So proclamations of absolutes certainties and intolerance for counterpoint seem to be irrational takes.
Hope we can live in the middle.
Its a beautiful place.
If I am projecting and this is in fact a molehill, thats cool.
-
@drgnslayr were you suggesting this year? Seems like that ship has sailed. I assume you meant generally speaking, order of operations.

At this point, I think most people feel very comfortable/confident saying there is a zero percent chance of Bill Self ever being an NBA head coach.
Self isn’t going to coddle stars in the NBA and in San Antonio’s case, if management had to choose between Wemby/Castle and Self in a dispute, it would be much easier to replace Self than Wemby/Castle. Denver just fired Mike Malone less than two seasons removed from winning a championship and Jokic didn’t fight it when he had the influence to keep Malone.
Self’s health is also a big reason. The NBA is a much longer grind than college basketball. 6 months of 3 to 4 games per week, potentially two more months for the playoffs, and a month at the beginning for training camp/preseason.
Lastly, I don’t think anyone in the NBA is interested in Self as a head coach at this point. If Self wanted to continue coaching in some capacity, I could see him taking the Jim Calhoun route of going to a lower level in D2 or D3 where players aren’t going to those schools for NIL deals and Self could focus on teaching and coaching the game.

@Texas-Hawk-10 appreciate the enumerated take. Makes a lot of sense
-
My 2cents: I see this as a succession planning effort. The assistants that will be brought in will be “interviewing” for the role of HC. Whoever stays will have established a relationship with the players that are crucial to retain as the head coaching position transitions. (The new ‘GM’ will be a part of this process as well). I think this is all about program continuity and stability.
-
@bskeet Player retention doesn’t seem to be a thing tied to loyalty of anything but the almighty dollar. See Flory our biggest mercenary for the upcoming season, I’m sure he’ll be expecting a raise the following year regardless of who is in charge.
-
Some interesting rumors floating around…
Former player crowd might get their wish for the second opening, but someone you wouldn’t think would take it.
-
Big name or walk-on type?
-
@BShark Jacque Vaughn is the only person I can think that fits that mold. I’m sure there are others, but I just have a hard time imagining him wanting to go down a level.
-
Former players that I would love to see coaching someone else’s team for the drama - Lagerald Vick, Branden Greene, Naadir Thorpe.

Bingo. HCIW talk too…he wants to be #9.
-
@BShark He’s always been amongst my favorite Jayhawks. Not sure about his coaching chops. I felt he got the short end of the stick in NJ.

Was at a couple terrible teams as HC. From what I’ve seen, he has good/modern coaching concepts/ideas. Spent some time under Popovich too.
-
-
Vaughn got a raw deal in Orlando too. Every reason to believe he would be a good coach and a player development guy.
-
Ooooh. Vaughn would be good.
Who would be a more likley HCBS replacement Buford or Vaughn?

Aaron Miles would be the other name that would meet that criteria.
Vaughn is damaged goods in the NBA. Raw deal or not, he’s not likely getting another chance to be an NBA head coach without showing on court success and the only way at this point would be to drop down to the college ranks. There is a little history of NBA coaching flame outs dropping down to the college ranks and being successful so hopefully Vaughn can follow those footsteps.

Same I’d probably hope more for Miles. Definitely wouldn’t consider the HCIW deal either. That’s how you end up with Hubert Davis running your program.
-
@TYOHawk What if Aaron Miles is also on staff?

Jon Scheyer was in the same role as well under Coach K and has turned out pretty good to this point for Duke. HCIW isn’t a curse. There’s good examples of it and bad examples of it.

Now you’ve got my attention lol.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 Vaughn was 71-68 with the Nets and got them to the playoffs twice. He also showed noticable improvement with young rosters. I dont see him as damaged goods at all.

Oops. No, not now! I meant a phase out. 1 or 2 years. We probably learn more about his timed exit with Roberts’ replacement. I keep hearing Chris Beard’s name as a replacement for Self. Is this real? I like his abilities as a coach, but this is KU! Are we going to be able to keep our reputation for long coaching runs? I wonder if that will be possible moving forward!
-

This I would agree with. I think we will see a clear succession plan too. Bill doesn’t want to leave KU in a bad spot.
-
Jacque is 50. Beard 52. Will wade 42. Todd Golden 39.
Bill was 41 when KU hired him.

Agreed, we aren’t the SEC. Honestly is embarrassing to me that there is even speculation that KU would go with Beard and I’m hopeful it is just fan chatter.
-
What should we look for in a new coach? I think the landscape is changing. A skill has emerged on my radar… evolution! A coach who is open minded and capable to adapt quickly to the changing landscape. This makes me think YOUNG! Where do we find youth with vast experience? Maybe a past player who also played in the NBA, or coached in some role at that level?
-
I can’t imagine the powers that be are dumb enough to hire Chris beard no matter how much self likes him. Would absolutely hate that hire and might be one of the few ways to get me to stop watching ku hoops.

Thanks @dylans. This is a helpful and relevant data point.
FWIW, Miles is 42. Chase Buford is 35.
