I hope T-Rob will get a real chance in Denver. I didn’t expect him to be an all-star type performer in the NBA, but I was certain he would become a solid, every-day contributor. A 10-and-8 type of guy.

@JayhawkRock78 I do, as well, but it doesn’t seem like this is a positive in the near term, and it’s doubtful he stays with the Nuggets. My guess is that he is viewed as - in the vernacular - a trade asset. Believe he has an expiring contract and would give the Nuggets (or someone else) cap room if he released. Difficult to see the Nuggets as a good fit otherwise - don’t think he can displace Faried at PF. And, Arthur and Hickson are existing back-ups. Perhaps as a back-up at the 5, although he is undersized for that. Actually, if he is waived, a good fit could be the Wizards - hometown and they could use additional frontcourt bench help.

The situation at Denver might be better than Portland. While the Blazer only have Aldridge as the other PF, they have 4 Centers on the roster that routinely play PF. At Denver he will backup Faried and Arthur but other than that, Denver does not have a glut of bigs since Mosgov was trade to the Cavaliers. I understand Denver is trying to trade JaVale McGee and his big salary ($11M+) which would open more playing time but they have been unable to find a team that would take him and his big contract.

@JayHawkFanToo You may be right - Denver did succeed in unloading McGee. May create an opportunity. In fact, they really don’t have much in the middle right now. Certainly hope TRob gets a chance - and, more importantly, if he does, takes full advantage of it.

Another trade…the Sun’s Dragic traded to the Miami Heat; this is probably not good news for Chalmers who had lost and regained his starting spot and now Miami has a glut of guards.
Also, apparently Garnett has approved a trade to the Wolves…he is one of 6 players in the NBA with veto power over trades and the talk was that he did not want to move in the middle of the season. He has indicated and interest in buying the Wolves and maybe this is the first step since he has one, maybe two seasons left to play.

You have to feel for Robinson, who is headed to his fourth team in four years after being selected No. 5 overall in 2012. Portland elected not to pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, so he now has to try to prove himself in a frontcourt rotation that is already crowded. Perhaps it will be good for him to be around Kenneth Faried, though. Teams will be interested in him if he can be a budget version of Denver’s energetic power forward.

It’s being reported that he has already agreed to a buyout with the Nuggets and will become a free agent. Good move. He wasn’t going to get much time with Faried in front of him. Hope he finds a team that really needs him.

Faried is averaging 27.4 mpg this season, not really a big number considering there are 48 minutes per position. Arthur is averaging 17.9 mpg, so TRob’s time will have to come from one of those two, although TRob can probably play Center at times…

Buyout from Denver to seek better opportunity with another club. I’m guessing his agent has an idea of what he’s doing. Read the article about the buyout in the Portland paper. Thomas is loved up in Portland by the team and the fans. Lots of fans hoping he resigns with them. Here’s to hoping he can get picked up by a team that uses him and doesn’t just have him ride the pine.

NBA rules prevent Portland from resigning him for I believe 30 days after the trade. I would guess that his agent has been in contact with some other teams and knows that there is interest out there for him.

@Crimsonorblue22 Phoenix would be too awesome. That might make me actually want to watch the NBA. The Lakers could use him too, and I’d love to see a Robinson/Black front line (woulda been great at Kansas, too).

Poor economist that I am, this NBA buyout business has me baffled more than somewhat. Do I understand correctly that TRob is due approx. 1.2 million on his current contract. Denver might offer him $600K for a buyout, after which he is free to sign with anyone, maybe even return to Portland? So he might gain dollars in the process? Or perhaps lose dollars if he signs the buyout, then no other team would offer much for his services?

I believe you have it correct. The buyout is money in his pocket that he gets and he does not have to do anything else for Portland. Whatever contract he gets from another team is money on top of the buyout. Not being tied to a team and/or contract, obviously makes it easier for other teams to negotiate with him since no other team with a say or need for compensation is involved. Hopefully he finds one that offers him a real chance to play and not just temporarily replace injured players.

@JayHawkFanToo @REHawk I don’t pretend to understand the NBA’s CBA and player contract and salary cap rules, but a couple of things are pretty clear. As noted in an earlier post, he can’t be resigned by Portland for another 30 days. I believe he also has to clear waivers after being bought and and released before he can sign with another team. Likely to happen as I don’t think anyone else will want to be on the hook for his contract. Depending on the terms of the buyout, it is possible that he could end up with less money - if, for example, he is willing to sign for the league minimum (pro-rated) for the remainder of the year, if he (and his agent) determine that it is the best opportunity for him to play and demonstrate he can be a consistent 10 and 10 guy. If that happens, he would be in a much better position to negotiate a new, longer term contract.

@DCHawker whatever it is… I hope someone has his best interests at heart and he can get a chance to prove himself! I would be interested in a follow-up story on him and his sister. A lot of fans, including Frank Martin made contributions.

TRob has reportedly inked a contract with the mighty Nets (has to clear waivers first). Seems like a very odd choice given the teams that had expressed interest in him. Even as bad as they are, it’s not clear that he is likely to get that much more playing time than he did in Portland with Brook Lopez and Mason Plumlee at the 5 and newly acquired (for KG) Thaddeus Young at the 4 (backed up by Cory Jefferson from Baylor). Thought Miami was the best opportunity with Bosh out for the rest of the season, or hooking up with the Twins in Phoenix.
Hope it works out for him…

@Statmachine Perhaps so, although it’s not much of a commitment on the Nets part and you would think TRob would want something for the rest of the year - a situation where he could get meaningful PT and opportunity to position for a new contract in free agency. Don’t know if he wasn’t able to get anything more than a 10-day. If his agent’s were pushing the buyout from Denver, one would hope that they had this fairly well scoped out, but who knows. Just seems difficult to imagine him getting that much PT in the next 10 days.

@DCHawker Agreed. Seems odd to pick up a 10 day contract instead of staying on with Nuggets. I thought the asking for a buyout meant there were teams out there seriously wanting Thomas as a serviceable back up but I guess not? I mean, why else go for a buyout? I don’t have the numbers but I’d venture a guess the remaining money on his contract (@REHawk stated 1.2million) is/was more than buyout + 10day contract dollars. Because wouldn’t his 10 day contract or really any contract he signs at this point be for the league minimum and it would be pro-rated??
Caught this in Twitterland: 5 reported teams interested per some guys Twitter… Thomas Robinson has had discussions with the Spurs, Nets, Suns, Heat and Hornets, completing DEN buyout Sunday, league sources tell RealGM.
All 5 are fighting for the last few playoff spots in their respective conferences so he’s not going to the power houses but isn’t at a cellar team either. Looking at the depth charts for all 5 I’m with you guys in that the Suns and Spurs are in more need of a PF than the Nets.
Do we know if the buyout not Thomas and Co. idea or was it the Nuggets that wanted to shed him instead??

If I recall correctly, NBA teams have to have a minimum number of players under contract and available. When a player is out injured and they don’t have enough players, they usually sign someone to temporarily to fill-in and meet the League requirements, even when both parties know it is just a temporary thing. I will guess that picking up $40k-$50K for 10 days of doing not much is better than the alternative.

@Kip_McSmithers Agree - why ask for the buyout unless you (your agent) have a pretty good idea that there is a better situation. He wasn’t likely to get much PT in Denver, where they have a very deep bench, but apparently, they weren’t prepared to just waive him and eat the entire amount. And, yes, I would assume the 10-day contract is for the league minimum; if so, he’s leaving money on the table. You do that if you think you can land a better spot to showcase your talents heading into free agency. Just doesn’t seem like the Nets are the best fit - esp. given one report that they weren’t interested in him, but changed their minds over the weekend.
@JayHawkFanToo I believe you are correct that you need a minimum number of players under contract as per the CBA, but an injury wouldn’t change that - it could just free up a roster spot temporarily or create a short term need, but I don’t think a team would have to add a body. But in the case of a team like the Heat, there is a real need for a PF with Bosh out the rest of the year.

@Kip_McSmithers I think the Nets need a serviceable PF more than anyone in the league. With Mirza Teletovic out for the season with blood clots in his lungs and Kevin Garnett traded to the timber wolves. That leaves the Nets with Cory Jefferson and Brandon Davies as their only 2 PF’s on the roster.

He is. a PF and he is slated to replace Plumlee as the starting PF for the Nets. I am not sure why ESPN has him a SF when they are the ones reporting that Young will take Plumlee’s place.
