  The chance of any team going unbeaten from and entire season is highly unlikely. Granted, players come to college playing at much higher level than they did 40 years ago; a result of better facilities, better coaching, better competition and advances in physical preparation. However, the majority of the top players will not play more than one or two years in college and their best play will happen, not in college but in the NBA. 40 years ago, there were at most a dozen schools that dominated the scene every year and had a realistic chance to contend, and many would not play more than a couple of other top teams on a given year. Today, there are 30-40 teams that on a given day can beat any other team and with luck, they can make deep runs in March. The Big 12 alone has 4 teams ranked in the top 20 and every one of these teams will play the other teams in 6 games (3 home, 3 away), so the chances to go unbeaten in conference play or the season, even for a top team like KU, are very small; even smaller for other teams. Of the 5 teams that started the season in the top 5, MSU. UK, Louisville, Duke and KU. all of them have already lost at least 1 game. Too much parity and zero chance of building a dominant team, with top players with more than a couple of years of experience.

  By stating “elite” talent, can we assume we are talking about top20 guys? Good stuff @Ralster. Just to clarify, I don’t mean top 20 talent. I mean that one kid that comes along maybe once every 2-3 years or longer. That clear cut top guy in the class. Granted this year is unique, as there are several players (Parker, Randle, Gordon) that would usually be the best of the best most any other year. As I mentioned with guys like Cliff Alexander, I’m confident we’ll get plenty of top 20 kids regardless of how Wiggins does.

  I am not surprised, after all they have a lot in common. They are both pros at what they do, both are consider to be near the top of their respective fields and both are sleaze-balls. Compared to Clinton and the squid, Barry is just an incompetent amateur wannabe.

  I’m pretty sick of the polls this early in the season. MSU will lose soon enough. Zona will definitely drop a few too. I don’t see a clear favorite right now. It’s too early. Our ranking is about right at #6? We’ll move up to #4 soon and hopefully can stay there most of the season. We’ll be up and down between 8-4 over the next few weeks through January and hopefully the guys will find their identity and when they do, I pity the teams they play when they break out of this funky talent slump. I see Wigs busting out at some point for 30+. I wonder when he’ll hear, “Overrated…Overrated…”? I’m thinking it’s going to be in Stillwater as the Pokes support Smart’s comments.

  If I decide to put a wild expectation on a superstar player this year it will be an expectation for Embiid setting a new NCAA shot block record in March Madness. Sounds like a wild expectation now… but will it in March?! Could he really be that fast of a learner? I think he could be. The fact that he never played basketball before 3 years ago means Self is working with a blank slate. No bad old habits to overcome.

  Kip… I wish we could all sit in on practices. If I was a betting man I would bet the ranch that Self has spent most practices working on defense. There is a reason he does it this way; defense comes first in Selfball! He’s afraid if they get too good on offense now, they’ll never accept working hard enough on defense to become a solid defensive team. Becoming solid on defense is our best shot at winning another National Championship. I bet he won’t focus hard on offense until Christmas. We always see a different team after break, and that bump is because our offense finally gets locked down in execution and tweaked to adjust for different teams and their strategies. Just look at what we’ve seen so far. Our most fluid offense is our open-court run outs. We already have those down better than most teams will ever learn. There is a reason for that… because run outs are a reward for playing good defense and fighting for defensive rebounds! So a big part of our offense practiced to this point is the run out. I guarantee we’ve put in plenty of time on that. This is just my opinion… sounded right coming out! I’m not a gambler so it is easy for me to go out on a limb!

  One of the announcers at the KU-UTEP game said…at this point Wiggins is just an athlete with no basketball skills, which is an extreme and incorrect exaggeration…you can take it with a grain of salt because he also said when KU was ahead by 5 and 1 free throw left…if he makes this free throw it will be a two possession game; really? Since when a 5 point lead is not a 2 possession game?

  I disagree with the idea of switching personnel just because the supposed stars are not performing as expected. I think it is better to push the stars to higher heights than trying to replace them with lesser talent. If the less talented players have the experience to compensate their physical limitations like Moody, I’d take that. But at this point Landen has no experience and physically is no match to Black, Embiid, or Wiggins. Even Selden at 6’6" 220lb should be able to post up and play as a short 4 on the college level. I don’t believe we need more green wood to take up the floor. Their chance is in their Junior or Senior years. I believe Lucas belongs to the bench this year, and we need Embiid, Black to learn to play hard without fouling. And Traylor has not played with the maturity level he is supposed to have this season. After all, he has worked with Coach Self for three years already. So I guess I wouldn’t be sorry if Lucas takes Traylor’s minutes.

  Hey… Landen gave some positive minutes in the loss to Villanova. I’m glad to see him earn some real game minutes… and I hope he continues to pick up a few quality minutes. It will do him good to earn the experience and will help drive him to improve more so he’ll earn even more of those minutes! Rock Chalk, Landen Lucas!

  I’ve got the game yet to watch (in full) on someone’s DVR. Will see it tomorrow. But I did see part of the game on the internet via the link someone posted on here. I just caught a few minutes of the second half. I recall watching our fast break defense collapse. Someone on WF dribbled the ball, coast to coast, right by Perry (who had his back to the ball and not even watching). Perry actually was a moving screen against his own teammate. That will be a humiliating piece of tape to run back in Lawrence next week when coaches evaluate this road trip. I also watched Mason totally keeping us alive with scoring and energy. I wonder if our second team, in general, can typically match the performance of our first team. As long as Embiid and Mason stay on second team… I hope several of our guys were just sick… because some of the play looked sick. Don’t know if they can improve much playing again today. Seems that we rarely play well on these island pre-conference tourneys. We have to realize how good it is to win games now where we play bad. We don’t get penalized with a loss, but CS collects plenty of ammunition to take into practices and drill these guys. It’s hard to keep a team of young guys paying attention all the time and hustling. It is clear that CS had to pull the starting five in order to get their attention in the Bahamas.
