  I think the point about Perry stepping outside and hitting the jumper (not necessarily a 3 pointer) when he is matched up against a bigger guy is a great one. I have often yelled at the TV for him to do just that. If he does that a few times, he then might be able to use his quickness and drive right around some of the bigger guys. I think Embiid is the one key (if forced to pick one) to our success. However, teams will double him. He has to be able to continue to learn to properly handle the double and we have to make teams pay for that. I think he / we will.

  I loved the overall team energy in this game. We were just chatting in here if they could become more of an open court team. The TCU game was a kind of hybrid version of open court. We picked up the pace considerably and often scored in what I classify as a secondary break (anytime the defense hasn’t set yet). I know we accomplished all this at home against the worst team in our league… but at least we accomplished it and got a taste of what our future can be if we bring a different mindset (and strategy) into games. Even though TCU offered little defensive resistance, we still had to come out there and push the pace beyond what was our previous comfort level and then execute. This was a good opponent to try this strategy, and hopefully we will take some confidence away from it and bring the same amount of energy into future games. It will be tougher to execute this style of game away from home and against tougher opponents… but we have the talent to do it. And if we maintain a high level of confidence it won’t be so incredibly hard to do it against better teams. That was a fun game to watch, and if my memory serves me right this was the first game in a long time we really mashed our opponent. We didn’t let off their throats the entire game. Even our walk-ons performed admirably. I hope Self is just bluffing on Embiid’s return for Tech. I’d like to see us have to win on the road without him. Embiid gives the rest of our guys a sort of security blanket that doesn’t help them stay motivated. It would be nice to have a few games without him and let them build on that motivation… long enough to establish a pattern. Plus… we need him fresh for March! What we experienced Saturday closely connected to the expectations many of us have for this team. Amazing how much better they look when they all keep a high-revved motor! Now we have to learn to play that way against better opponents. Not a hard adjustment… mostly mental.

  I can’t believe the response on the subject of green! Maybe we should have an ongoing thread that is for everything outside of basketball. I definitely appreciate all the great advice in here… looking forward to spring so I can try out some of these great ideas!

  @Kapone2323 I agree that Wiggins was a great get for us and that he will help us compete for a title this year and will help with future recruiting once he becomes a stud in the NBA. Wiggins could finish better and he could pass more, no question. The thing he does best is plays tough D. If the rest of our team played D like Wiggs we would probably be looking at 1 or 2 losses instead of 6. Our D will be what makes the difference in March.

  I must say, by resting Embiid, Coach Self restored my faith that he will do what’s the best for his players. Playing hurt for the college may win the coaches, the school and fans games, but it may also shorten the players’ playing career in the long run. It’s not for the best interest of the players. When a coach says he has the players’ best interest, but still plays the players hurt, it simply shows the coach has no integrity. The coach is ultimately responsible for his players just like a parent is for his/her children. I’d never put my son in harms way and I expect the coach the same.

  We can also analytically add that Tharpe’s “defensive” is absolutely killing us. I personally believe we lost the KSU game due to his lack of D. The reason I like Bill Self’s approach is, yes, I like razzle-dazzle offense and transition highlights…but I also love the half-court stuff we run. But defense is HUGE: basketball is played on 2 ends of the court, so you “gotta make the opponent ugly, and take low% shots, or rushed shots…”. We are better than Royball now. Those days are gone. This team needs to get with their coach’s program on 1] defense, and 2] intensity level x 40min.
